Itchn' for Sctratch - Rebuilding an F9F Wing Tip Tank
Posted by Bockscar on Saturday, September 24, 2011 3:05 PM

I recently got an Aurora F9F Panther, circa 1960, and it came from the Netherlands via a 50 year hiatus in France. The box had more mold on it than a Brie or bottle of Chateau Lafite. Over those 50 years, someone in France must of figured that half of the wing tip tank would make a good escargot pick!

The challenge is to build that part:

Using the one remaining as a template, I began tracing and cutting sheet styrene:

A  4'*8' sheet costs me about $40-50.

I opted for thick sheet after I realized I would need about 7 of the thin ones:

I learned this technique in high school shop class, using wood or acrylic as the laminates:

Yes, they are the same length, just an illusion.

I'll do a bit more carving then drill the slot out before shaping with an X-acto, and post the process.

I want to dedicate this little project to MSGT Bill Bernhardt, "Berny".

Wow...gotta get a sweater, and sneakers, and cozy up to the styrene grinder, gosh, so quiet these days, you'ld think guys might be off buildin' model airplanes.......how dumb is that.......can't be true, boys and girls....

so here's how the drilling went...no...not by Dremmel....although my wife threatens to buy me one....

Here we drill styrene.......by hand......that's a nice bit of handi-work from a master in Ohio in the background...

yeah, the bullets through that objective were somewhat shady.......more to comm,,,,,,errrrh come... ....friend.......more bullets obviates need for accuracy commrade..........erhhhh....friend......

Nice hand Drill!...Pal...!!!
