Yeah, those might be some choices.

Or, the students at Kharkov Khai(it was, after all, an aviation institute) could've gone the Callair route. Callair used a canvas sling between a pair of tube for bench seats in their light planes(was in on the restoration of a Callair 9, the model which led up to the Schweizter crop duster).

I dunno. Got a lot of research to do as of yet(in other words a lot of scrounging, seeing as there is a paucity of hard data on this).

It was the Soviet Union in the '30's.  The seats were pikes with a cage that dropped down over the top to keep the victims, er, passengers in place.  Big Smile

You can also check out British Airways web site.  They have a History site with vintage pictures from all decades they've been flying airliners in.  Here's one of the pages:

Wicker or bent plywood is probably very close to accurate.

You could model the wicker and you probably wouldn,t be far off .Or maybe they used porch type hard chairs . You know like the very poor metal ADIRONDAK looking chairs .

Unless you can find a photo or other documentation, who's to say you're wrong? On something like that, I tend to do as much research as I can, and then go with what makes the most sense. It's MY model, after all.

Well, back then, The Soviet design engineers were just getting started in civil aircraft(just look at the accommodations in the PO2, which came a tad earlier), so perhaps something roughly along the lines of the Tin Goose, which was an early airliner in the US, which had, I believe, wicker seats.

But, seeing as there is a paucity of documentation, I guess no one would argue scale fidelity with me.

That's what I've been thinking of. But, would it be acceptable to copy and modify an existing pilot seat multiple times?

For 1:72 airliners I've made seats from plastic angle stock, cutting off pieces the width of seat. One can round the edges of seat and back.  That might be a bit crude for 1:48, but the angle stock pieces would be a good start.  You also need a pedestal to mount the seats on, but on must airliners you cannot see much of the seat mounting anyway, through the windows. In 1:48 you would also probably want to add armrests if the prototype seats had them.

Both Evergreen and Plastruct offer styrene angle stock and most hobby shops have a pretty good selection of sizes.

I'm not certain about styles of airliner seats in the Soviet Union, but here is an article about riding in American airliners of the era:

http://www.uh.edu/engines/epi1808.htm

I don't know much about airliners of that era, but doing a Google Image search of specific aircraft interiors might be a worthwhile follow-up.

For example: here's a Fokker FVII interior produced by Google Images search for Fokker FVII interior

Got a question about seats

I'm in the process of scratch building a Kharkov KhAI 3. This was a prototype airliner of 1936 vintage in the Soviet Union, but was never put into production. What it was was a tail less delta wing, with two gondolas on top of the wing for pilot and passengers. There are no photographs at all, just a three view. I'm planning on building this in 1/48 scale.

My question is: how would I build the passenger seats? What were passenger seats in airliners of the 30's like? Would they be simply equivalent to lawn chairs?
