Building a boat.
Posted by Kevleerey on Saturday, January 28, 2012 6:16 PM

It's been far too long since I've built anything. Figured I'd use some sheet styrene that was lying around and maybe get back into it. Perhaps I should've started with something simpler, like a box... Also posted this over in ships. I need to figure out a better way to apply CA than the tip on the bottle. I tried a needle with the top cut off but it wouldn't hold any glue. I'd think a brush would work but only once. What works good?

One suggestion would be to build a Midwest dinghy kit. It is very close to what you are trying to do.  Once you build that, you'd have a better idea of how it is done, and you can proceed with a scratch project.  The Midwest kits are not that expensive.  Model Expo is one source.

Ditto what Don said.  Another help would be finding a book that shows you how to build a dinghy, although the Midwest kit would pretty much do that.  Even though I never finished mine, they go together easily and quckly.

Buddy- Those who say there are no stupid questions have never worked in customer service.

Hey Don, I went over to eBay and found this for sale. Was this written by you, then?

Yep, that was mine.

However, it was ONLY printed in the magazine.  Since the mag holds the copyright, I assume the seller is ripping off the magazine.  Actually, I think the agreement was that I still hold the copyright but gave full permission to the mag, so the guy is ripping me off too.

Hi, Kevin. For super glue (aka CA glue), I just use a plain old wooden toothpick. The tip can be cut to any size you need. I squeeze a good-sized puddle of CA on an old credit card/hotel room card/piece of plastic/anything you can find, dip the tip of the toothpick in the CA, then SPARINGLY apply the CA to the area I need glue. If you need the glue to dry faster than normal, lightly apply some CA accelerator to the glue after the the two parts are glued together. Works great for me.
