Itchn' for Scratch II: F-4 J-79 1/32 Flame Holders

Another day, another evolution.

Cut the rondels out of sheet styrene.......they are going to hold the turbine cones and blades.....

Really, really hi-tech, super hi-tech----Scotch tape dispenser rolls....pretty close to 1/32 F-4 burner can inner dimensions.

So I cut the inner ring out, and cut it evenly through its radial axis, sanded the faqirs, and cut them to reduce

their own radius to match the inner dimensions of the head of the burner cans.

So many empty Scotch Tape Dispensers....so little time.......

So there they are.....recommissioned to act forever as aft-turbine blade holders......

Ouch, and the pen tips......gotta stuff the tips......Ouch.......ever been to hospital.......

Yickitty, can hardly see it......

And then I had to put that all in motion.......nice.........not bad for a pen point, but only six reinforcements....Bastiges!

Yah, wish I coulda' done hat with the Easy-Vac-Oven..........lol.......

So I've managed to get past the hard part, and

put together those flame holders:

Looks like a cast iron burner for deep frying turkeys:

Crude, but effective:

Should look okay once done in burnt steel:

So that's a big step completed, now I can start gluing the bird together.

Here's the exhaust cone, glued to that disc I cut, and the pen tips have been filled with sprue and rounded off:

I will glue the legs of the holder into those two fairings I cut. I have begun to glue all of that lumber in these pictures onto the discs. I had a few problems, maybe due to working late at night. I cut a few of the turbine blades a few thou too short.....

I thought I'ld get it all finished this weekend, but the snags added up like tolerance stack.

I'll try and hide the short blades behind the legs of the flame holders......

....good news, my turbine blades are longer than Tamiya's, mind you, their exhaust cones are about a 16th wider, so it will all even out, phew!

Those exhaust turbines confirm I am no longer in a race.......

Those are straight exhaust or aft turbine blades:

So now I need to double them up,, for a total of 32.....close to J-79 spec, but not the true final count.

I'm not GE or P&W, so I was still with Revell tolerance for this kit.

So, I doubled up the blades:

Ugly, yes, notice I sculpted the holder ring a bit:

Should be far enough away from the eye to cover up some of the rough spots....:

So, back to blast rings;

I'll cover up the nasty blade tips with the blast rings, and still have more blade showing than the Tamiya version.

I simply cut the tape spool axles out of Scotch tape dispensers, as they were the only junk styrene on hand that came close to the build's tolerances:

Yeah, they will cover up the builder's mistakes pretty good;

That is a pure styrene so as many of you know, it is crispier than kettle-cooked chips;

I'll cut the axles down to match the rest of the components, and when the critics look up the burner cans hopefully they won't get.....you know what in the eye....lol....

I get about an hour every Friday night, so please don't get too ornery if this ain't happnin' fast enough....

If I get a chance to detail those blast rings i will post.

I checked the burnt iron and olive drab paint and it has gone into seizure waitin' for me......

little darlins, whithered by idle time....lol......use it or lose it......

I merely cut the spool stabilizer locking tabs off the spool axles;

they would make great Thud feathers...lol...

There they are, the 'blast rings', to hide my aft turbine blade indiscretions!

Already, the blades look better.

No, you did not see imperfections in blade spacing!!!...lol....

the paint hates me, and I hate it. I'll let you know how the colors go.....

The actuators help give the inside of the turkey feathers a nice look:

It was a nice sunny Sunday and 70 outside, so I sat under our patio umbrella with a wobbly pop, and cut lumber:

I will now try and glue 20 of those per exhaust into place.

I have the revell 72 phantom, high detailed kit but the afterburner chamber is one of weak point of the kit, will follow for some future tip

If you can actually detail J-79's in 1/72, you are a better man than me!....

i scratched some in line cylinder engine and the twin gannet gas turbine ,actually working on the db-605 engine on a Veltro kit but never really try a jet engine. The pieces are sure litter than a 1/32 but with a major scale you need more details and more precision, in 1/72 you can allow some missing part .

On the j-79 i will try only to detail the back chamber section and the exhaust terminals that are totally smooth inside  

Seeing as that Napier engine is sitting in a Humbrol paint pot, either you have great eyes or great glasses!
