Looking for free 1/72 or 1/48 scale plans of WWI aircraft models.

I am looking for free 1/72 or 1/48 scale plans of aircraft from the World War-I era to scratch-build from paper card, plastic and wood. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.Smile

You can look at http://www.the-blueprints.com/; they have over 50,000 bitmap (free) and vector (moderate charge) images of planes, trains, and automobles, and other stuff. The bitmaped stuff varies wildly in quality, but some of it is excellent. You have to register to get the full sized free pics, but that's no biggie....

I have found several lately by doing a Google image search.  While 99% of the images are photos (they may be useful too), there ARE some scale drawings in many cases.

Don't worry about the scale of the drawing.  With digital photo editors today you can easily resize/rescale a scale drawing.

Another option is your local library looking for books on WW1 aircraft.

A good bet is to search for books for two good illustrators who used to do scale drawing for model mags, William Wylam and Paul Matt.  Many of their drawings were republished as books of collections of these drawings- there are several volumes of each.  The most recent is two volumes of Paul Matt drawings.  These are currently in print and do include some WW1 stuff, though only American planes.

Hi Don,

Thanks for your ideas, very much appreciated. I have seen a few of them but not all are very interesting models to choose from. The drawings by Paul and William should be a better bet I guess, even if they may not be free!!! I don't have access to any library in Mumbai that usually stocks up on such magazines or books unlike in the past when I used to read and get some plans from Scale Models (UK) and some other Aircraft and Scale modelling magazines from a library at the local Nehru Science Center. Unfortunately not many people in Mumbai have an interest in such hobbies nowadays.

This is a great source of 3-view drawings but no section views so it becomes a bit of a problem when one wants to build an accurate model in perfect scale. This is fine for a simple overview or a basic model with not much details. Also, it does not mention the scale on the drawings.

Hi Artworks2,

Well, still around but not much building activity right now!!! Have to get into the mood to do that soon!!! The interest is still alive so I keep collecting books and other material to make models. Just bought some lovely old aircraft books with 1/72 scale plans as well from a book sale the other day.

Cheers,

Aadil.

Hi Andrew T,

Did visit the site but could not find anything substantial that was downloadable there except for the Wright Flyer. Thanks anyway.

Cheers,

Aadil.

Go to google and type in  "Aircraft links to schematic drawings" I think you'll be pleasently surprised Aadil. How have you been? Winter is starting so I'm back on my projects.....

Thanks for the google link, Artworks2. Although it has only three / four views they are pretty good drawings and should be great for small sized models where much detail is not required.
