Republic XR-12

I have long been interested in the XR-12 and finally bought a book on the plane.  Hoped that it would have 3 views (which it does).  It looks like the fuselage is a simple figure of revolution (circular cross section).  I have a small hobby metal lathe that I think would be long enough, so thinking of doing the fuselage in wood, turning it on the lathe if I use 1:144.  Would cut off the front cockpit section and vacuform an upper and lower piece after sawing off the cockpit area.  The nacelles look like circular also except for the very rear section where the turbo exhaust is. I figure I can turn these and then carve that area into an oval on each nacelle.  Might be a bit before I actually start construction but will redraw and resize plans now and prepare the wood blanks- either basswood or aspen.

WINGS magazine had an article about that aircraft back in the early 1970s.

Beautiful aircraft.

However, before you set up your lathe:

Unfortunately In 1/72 not 1/144

BTW.............Out of curiosity, what brand / size hobby lathe do you own?

I have a Chinese made 9x20 lathe

Mine is also made in China. It is one of the ones sold by Micro Mark and is a 7 x 14 inch- not the very latest version but only a couple of years old. It replaces a Sherline, which i still have.  I had the milling attachment for it, so it stays set up as a milling machine.
