Neat biplane at Region 5
Posted by Don Stauffer on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 9:29 AM

I saw a beautiful Waco biplane at the Region 5 meet in Madison, WI.  It was scratch built and won several awards including a win in the biplane category. I forget which model Waco- it was one of the open versions, not the cabin.  Unfortunately, I forgot to pack my camera before leaving for contest.  Anyone else there who had a camera and snapped a shot of this beautiful model?  It had a fantastic metallic green finish!  An outstanding example of the scratchbuilt art.

Okay, a friend sent me a link to a photo from the show;

I can't seem to post the URL in the picture window and get a reasonable image, so let me just post the URL by itself. I urge you to take a look at a masterpiece of the scratchbuilder art, a beautiful Waco (I don't know the model numbers well enough to pick them out by looking at the planes).

Hi Don,

Agree, that's a beautiful model and I believe it's a Waco YMF

The builder, Terry, sent me a photo that I can post.  Here it is;

Not a kit in the world would look that good!  I'd like to see some of his techniques and build processes.

I'm sorry, but if someone were to bring out a kit in 1/32nd or 1/24th scale of any of the Waco bipes, or a couple of the Howard DGAs (Damned Good Airplane), perhaps one of the Staggerwings or even a Stearman, they would make money (wish we could convince WNW to produce them!)

And I'm not bad mouthing the gentleman who built that model , it's absolutely gorgeous.  Unfortunately I.ve never really been able to do more than minor scratch-building (Drat!!)

There IS a nice Staggerwing kit in 1:48 (Roden).  Yeah, I might build a 1:32 also, but at least there is a good 1:48 kit.

II finished one about a year ago- here is a pic of it against my airport photo backdrop.
