the model measures 18 inches in length overall, close to 1:48 in terms of scale. I was going to use a Glencoe 36' MLB as part of the diorama but I'm trying to keep the dio's "footprint" as small as possible, will just have a DUKW, and a couple of 1:48 scale trucks on the beach.
Yes, you do spy a 41 UTB (Dumas kit). It's half built, I'm going to rebuild it as the actual boat originaly appeared in 1973 with the first paint scheme (Spar decks and cabin tops), twin intake towers on the after deck, early Raytheon radar antenna.
Excellent job...I'm looking forward to your *Riled ocean*.
Hi Don
Thanks for the heads up, I always think "military figures" in 1:48 but forget about Walthers in "O" and I'm a train nut......
thunder1 Thanks Don The model is 1:48 scale. The diorama the boat will be part of requires 1:48 figures performing a breeches buoy rescue...now to find the figures!
Thanks Don

1:48 is model railroad O scale. There are many dozens of figures available from model railroad supply sources in that scale- you should be able to find some in poses that may be appropriate. Look up the Walthers site on the web- a major vendor of mr stuff.

thunder1 S-Goose-- its a plank on frame scratch build, the hull is rather generic as many types of fishing craft of that era used that style of hull.

Beautiful work !
Great looking boat! What is the overall length of the model if you don't me asking?
I spy with my little eye a 41' UTB
Nicely done... now I want scallops for supper tonight...

Thanks guys for the nice comments
Pawel- thanks for the heads up on figures. Preiser makes a nice product (and a little pricey) but you get what you pay for.
Fox--yes, it will get the weathered "treatment" but as the diorama will be set in the late 1950's this type of boat wouldn't be as beat up as the East Coast draggers were by the 1970's. I have a photo of a wood 1940's era net dragger taken in 1986 and it looks brand new. A lot of a boats appearence has to do with the boat's owner, some have a lot of pride in their boats some just beat them like a rented mule.
Very nice build thunder 1! Are you going to weather it up a bit? Most fishing boats only look that clean the day they go in the water for the first time. After that, they get dirtier every day.

I keep hitting "escape", but I'm still here.
Really nice !
Who is the kit manufacturer or did you scratch build it?
thunder1 - very nice model indeed! If I might - the Preiser company from Germany makes nice pedestrians in 1:50. Once I successfully converted four of them to a tugboat crew, maybe you would like to try it, too? Thanks for sharing, have a nice day

Very nice! What scale is that?
Here's my latest boat model, a scallop dredge. Built to be part of a diorama, the model will be lying on its port side being wrecked by large storm driven waves. At some point I'll have to damage the boat to add a bit of realism but for now its a shelf model. Constructing the ocean "when it's all riled up" is the next step.
Cheers!
