and this is 1 area where 3D printing can come into play. the research is identical. you still need all the details as you would in scratchbuilding, print the finished model which could be used to make a mould. THEN you can make a 3D file in multiple scales or make variations on a theme quite quickly. so spend 6 hours building the 3D computer model file in 1/35 and spend 10 minutes total making a 3D model file in 1/32. 1/48, 1/72, 1/144.

That's an area I am unfamiliar with being new-back into the hobby 3D modeling sound like fun!
