Total Scratch built B17G project in 1:20 scale
Posted by Foz on Sunday, February 19, 2017 3:51 AM

Hi to every one

I started this B17G project probably about 2 years ago and the initial aim was just to scratch build the front end of the Aircraft up to the upper Turret.

After I had finished it I started thinking that maybe I could continue down the fuselage building one section at a time. I knew that this would take me years but by building it in sections it would give me an opportunity to scratch build other subjects as a change.

I have completed the first section now ...including the Cockpit ,Navigation and Bombardier station ,and upper Turret position.

I do not profess to be some kind of engineer and all the models I make are built by looking at photos and trying to replicate what I see....so the model it self might not be 100% accurate...but I believe not too far out!Wink.

The materials I always use are Balsa wood...scrap plastic (Yogurt pots etc)...card ,electrical wire and anything I can find lying round the house or rubbish bin!!

Any way here are some photos of the finished front section of this B17G starting with the exterior.......

On the next post I would like to show you some interior shots of this first section.....

That is great work, considering the source of your material. I myself use sprue to sculpt my figers so I know the extent of work requiered to do a totale scratch build.

Rules are overrated

Really nice work!  It's one thing to get the details squared away but getting the airframe... just wow.  And great work on the colors

Thanks,

John

This is totally amazing to me!  When the first photos popped up on my screen, they were the middle photos, and I literally thought I was looking at actual photos of a Fort for reference.  Then I read the thread and realized these were photos of your build.  That this is all scratch built brings it to a whole new level.  Fantastic work.  Keep the photos coming as you continue your work!

Dwayne or Dman or just D.  All comments are welcome on my builds.

Kind of curious on why you use balsa rather than basswood.  Or is this going to be a flying model?

Hi Don...no this is going to be a static display piece....I used Balsa wood rather than basswood because I am very limited to materials in the country I live.....hence building with yogurt pot plastic and odds and sods!
