Wooden decks
Posted by Tanker-Builder on Sunday, June 11, 2023 8:38 AM

Hi, Ya'll!

Just a short note for you Shipbuilders out there. Having trouble getting wood decks for your models. Here;s an idea that might work for you. I sure you have ,heard maybe only in passing, of skived Leather! That's when the leather is worked and shaved as to be almost as thin as paper!( I think they use that for lverlays on desks and stuff).

Anyway.Find a cabinet shop in town. See if they have very thin, Almost (Construction Paper) thickness wood that came off the planer when they ran wood through it. Sometimes they do.  It's sometimes a product of setup for a certain planing project. Ask if they will do it for you or save those pieces for you. Now, if you do, don't forget, you asked a favor of them. Return the favor! Pick up what you promise to and be sure to let them know when you don't need more. That way they won't be collecting stuff no longer needed by their shop!

Tanker-Builder, that's a great idea and I'm going to look into that.  I'm halfway through Revell's 1/196 USS Constitution but I try it on my next ship kit.  Thanks again for the helpful tip.

I was almost done with the gun deck on my 1:96 Revell Constitution when I found out about the wood deck products. I opted for the ScaleDecks product (they make versions for both the 1:96 and the 1:196). It was a pain to rip out the cabin and guns to redo it all, but it was totally worth it.

(I've tried multiple times to add a photo of my build to this post but it never shows up. Here's a link to the pic if anyone cares: https://www.dropbox.com/s/yz6rpfu4mqmf5hb/2023-04-29%2023.00.18-25pct.jpg?dl=0 )

Tom!

If you can't do this there is a self done way.Go to harbor Freight. There you will find some Hand planes. get one of the widest and heaviest! Now, can you sharpen a straight Razor.if not, find a friend that can.Let hi, work the blade.Insert in the tool. Make sure the blade is square, and does NOT extend more than a piece of heavy construction paper beneath the bed(Handle.)

Now, put a piece of Basswood in your shielded(Padded Jaws) vise. Using a small penknife find which way the grain runs on a piece of Basswood 1"x2-1/2" in. measurement. Lock it in the vise with the grain running away from you. Now, using even pressure downward and forward create your own Skived wood. You will fail a few times but don't let this deter you, because if you don't, then, you'll have another tool both in your toolbox, but your Mind too!

Midwest products has a neat product.  The have a thin sheet of basswood 3 x 20 that has parallel grooves milled in it, just for ship decks.

See There!

It's been so long that with my Budget right, now I haven't been to the Hobby Shop to find stuff like this. What I have been doing is getting Rail Car siding and sanding it thin, and making it work
