You can use hypodermic needles or brass tubes cut and glued to form the barrels.

While the rest of the crew may be in the same predicament, it's almost always the pilot's job to arrive at the crash site first.

In the first place, there are more then one kind of chain gun(s). Some are large single-barrel pedestal-mounted large bore, some smaller single-barrel, those with six barrels, as well as the guns that shot chain shot, the Carronade bieng very nasty for personnel aboard an enemy sailing ship.

In the second place, we do not know what scale you are referring to, so your "gun" can be anywhere from tiny to full size.

So I mean, I could say plastic pipe and scrap lumber for starters, OK?

Yes, chain guns come in all different shapes and calibers.  You can use Q-tips (plastic part, after removing cotton balls).

Not that it'll help much, but Legend from Korea makes an AM set of 1/35th XM-134 7.62mm Mini Guns.

Actually, they put their Bern Gun into a neat little tracked carrier.

You know, the one with the gavity-fed top magazine.

Also, before the general avaibility of the Bran, they used a lot of Lewis machine guns, both swivel and bipod mounted, in North Africa as well in preference to the Vickers.

A good depiction of this is in the old re-released Henry Fonda movie "Immortal Sergeant".

Also, to do the "quote thing", drqgon, you simply click on the button marked "Quote" instead of "Reply".

I think you are confusing a gatling gun with a chain gun, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chain_gun

A gatling gun isn't that difficult to maken, chose a calibre aka find some barrels, cut out some circle's of styreen, drill holes for the barrels, insert and make a body to stick it al on. The body of the gun can be mounted an accesorized with anything you want, like a trigger, pistol grip, scope etc. (presuming you are doing a fantasy/ what if subject

Ok, looks like you're dealing with versions of the US M134 7.62mm MiniGun. Some of the footage on the website you referenced was from either Monster Garage or GI Factory. I saw the GI Factory episode and it shows show pretty good detail of the -D model. They don't discuss all the particulars or show the innards of the weapon or the faces of the people who build it for security reasons. Can't say as I blame them. You might be able to order a copy of GI Factory thru History Channel or is it Discovery Channel online?? - If you're so inclined. I also saw the episode of Monster Garage a couple of years ago and there's not too much that I can recall.

I've posted photos of the XM134 (Vietnam era) on our website Finescalegallery.com in the Reference section. The link above will to take you straight to the folder.

I've found the following Specs: GE M134 Minigun - Caliber: 7.62mm x 51  Weight:15.9kg Length:80cm  Barrel Length:56cm  Method of Operation:Electric, External Drive  Cartridge Feed:Belt  Rate of Fire: up to 6000 rds/min   Barrel Configuration- currently 6,rotary

Hope this helps.

Sorry I'm replying late on this, I just returned and have been reading through and thought I'd chime in on this.

I would first get photos as a ref... Then figure out what size the parts need to be, I use one of the scale calculators you can find on the web. Make notes and sketches of barrel lengths, drive mechanism, what ever you see in the photos and want to create on your version - drawings don't have to be Leonard Davinci quality, just a plan. Start collecting the parts. I find many useful pieces/parts at the Jo-Ann Fabrics, Michaels Crafts and of course your local hobby store. Look in the other sections too, model ships, trains, cars. There are multitudes of piece/parts for other models that may fit your needs.

I scracthbuilt a sci-fi version of a minigun in 1/35 scale. I used Aluminium tube, can't recall the size, sorry, but the ID was less than a mm. I chucked the tube in my mini dremel, on slow speed and tapered the tube with emery cloth - it's minimal but noticable - repeated for each barrel. I was at the fabric store and found metal pop-snaps. They have 4 holes around the outside edge to sew it to the garment. I used two of the male snaps. I used a mini rat tail file to open them up for the barrels. The male pop-snap has a nub or nipple in the middle that pops in to the other half, I cut that off leaving a small hole in the middle which I ran a piece of wire through that down the middle. Repeated that on the second male snap (test fitting along the way) was used as the base. So now I have 4 barrels, a based mounting plate and a few scale inches from the barrel muzzle is a retaining ring/support with central support. In the link you posted, the minigun has the same kind of plates holding the barrels in place. I tried sheet styrene but it looks way to thick.

Mine looks fairly realistic and the main thing is it matches the drawings/ref. pics. for the scratchbuild I am working on. I'll Try to post a photo of it once I figure out how...

The scale you are building in and the calibre will determine the tube size to use. A small calibre may not warrant a tube, say a 7.62 minigun in 1/48, I'd have to scale that down but you would probaly be using a #80 pin-vise bit to make a hole in the end of styrene rod. It's just a guess but at that scale the barrel is very small.

Cheers!

Start with the basic shapes.  If you need more detailed views check the link out at the bottom here.  I realize they are Airsoft Miniguns, but they are fullsize replica's, with the exception of the rounds they shoot.  They should be able to help you out.

http://www.montysminiguns.com/AirSoftPage.htm

While there check the main page as well, and look at all the video's.  Those airsoft ones SHRED tv sets badly.

Gatling Gun- AH-1 Cobra (the original, 3-barrel 7.62mm)

  Chain Gun- AH-64 Apache.

now what makes the difference between a machine gun and a chain gun in the case of the apache? i'm not sure, can anyone tell me?
