The fuselage stripes are going to be a lot of work too, with all the breaks in the stripes where the thin ones one run down the fuselage and intersect with the front scallops.  But it will look real snazzy when done, Bill.

Boy, you are not kidding.  I got the wings on mine masked, but those fuselage stripes are killing me!  I am going to try masking each stripe seperately, then go back and get the black areas between stripes seperately :-(

Apparently it gets worse.  We had a Golden Age fly in at the model field and one of the airplanes was the Mystery Ship in the black and red scheme, very well done in about 1/4 scale or larger.  It had yellow green pinstripes bordering all of the black markings.  I asked where the fellow got the documentation for that and he said it came from Doug Davis's family.  I menat to take pictures but got busy flying and forgot to get back to it.  The builder was Robert Stanley.

My daughter is down visiting for the week. Davis grad, fashion designer at Gap in corporate HQ.

So the wheel spat covers are a little weird. The scallops are red, the rest black. Reverse of the general scheme. I'm going to paint the wings, horiz stabs and fin and the gear first, then go back on the fus.

I think masking the red area inrrtuding into the black will be the way to go, then maybe black decal stripe in later.

Bigger problem. Plunge molded a dozen rings but the lady who cleans my house tossed them, so need to try again.

Don built a fantastic Model 40. I have that kit but the outlines of the color demarcations frighten me.

I know wht you mean.  I've tried to do this kit a few times but never have been able to get those stripes right.  I've always loved this aircraft and will probably try one more time.  This time I'll include the spare detail set I have laying around so it will have a better looking interior and engine.

I am doing it the other way around.  I am doing the long, thin fuselage stripes first, then the fuselage scallops.  Last I will do the wing and tail scallops- those look pretty straightforward (already have wing scallops masked).

This is looking really good. I'm going to hafta find this kit and build it.

I certainly thought about it- it is still a backup solution.  My concern is getting the stripe decals to have just the right shade and sheen of black.  And the bigger problem remains.  The black stripes are seperated from the black fuselage scallops by a 1/32 gap showing the base dark red color.  Masking the scallops next to the stripes would still be difficult.  I suppose one could mask and paint the fuselage scallops first, leaving a 1/8 inch gap, and put the decal stripes in the gap.  It is still my backup plan.

Made good progress after work today. I'm taking liberties with the kit pattern for 614, as Pancho had her own thing going. I added a dorsal stripe behind the cockpit, and I am painting the landing gear all black, no scallops. Those seem to show up in pictures of 613.

After a lot of messing around with sourcing a cowl ring or making one of my own, I just modified the kit NACA cowl. It actually looks about rignt, will be painted black.

Someone's just posted one of these on largescaleplanes in the non-LSP thread.  Looks good.

I was starting to mask the tail for scollops when I noticed the picture of Barnes plane didn't have them on tail!  My scalpel dug into stabilizers enough I will have to fix finish on horizontal tailplanes, but still eases my mind about those tiny scallops.

Looks fantastic!  Anxious to see how you do the stripes.

Thanks Toshi, got kind of Meh results. This aircraft is just so small.

Going back in with a toothpick and some of the maroon.

Piece of advice- put a backrest in if you dont use the pilot. Im going to have to after the halves were put together.

I screwed up a stripe on mine!  On the right side, I lost track of the line, and one of the stripes ended too low, rear is okay, as it moves to the front.  I had to sand the stripe off, and will have to do the red over, and then do the masking and black over!  This time I will be checking the left side to make sure the masking is in the right place :-(

I wrapped her up this afternoon. This was a fun build. I'd love to do another at a larger scale.

A few modifications; changed the reg. number to 613. Modified the NACA cowl to a shorter one like her aircraft had at some point.

I made the reg. decals and also the Ham decals for the prop. I looked at a lot of pictures and drawings as far as the wires. Certainly on the undercarriage the bracing looks like thin rods, or very heavy wires. Some drawings show a double line (not double wire though) so I used heavier sprue. All of it is pretty stout, maybe I got a little heavy with it.

Looks really great! But all that rigging. Wow.

The results look good.  I like the mods you made to the cowling.  The rigging does look heavy, but I wouldn't sweat over it. 

I, too, would like to build a 1/32 or 1/24 model of this plane.

Too bad WB did not include that plane in their 1:32 racing plane series.  And so far, the new management has stuck with repops of old molds, not new subjects.

Been drooling over the pics on FB from the Nationals in Phoenix which seemed to include some kind of display of winners from previous years going back quite awhile. One was this kit spectacularly done.

So for this build I cut down the NACA cowling to be the one that was on the AC just after it was converted from an inline to a radial.

Changed the Reg number from 614 t0 613 by printing new decals.

I like this aircraft and would look to build one twice the size (1/24).

GM, you turned out a real beauty there! Excellent job! 

Is there a larger scale kit of this aircraft type out there? In 1/32 perhaps?

The Mystery Ship seems to be popular with the larger scale RC folks. I haven't seen any other plastic kits though.
