Boeing 40B
Posted by Don Stauffer on Sunday, April 18, 2010 10:56 AM

Decided to go with the CMR Boeing rather than the Merlin one.  Picked it up yesterday and it looks like a beautiful kit.  Can't wait to start on it.  I am building a ship now (Revell's container ship) but as soon as that is done the Boeing goes on the bench.  VERY nice interior for a 1:72 scale model.

A recent price reduction on that kit is what convinced me to get it instead of the Merlin kit.

I'll be interested to see how she goes, Don. I have one in the stash. The color schemes are pretty intricate at that scale. I did a little color research, and John Eaton suggested a couple of links for me. It seems like the best orange match would be "Reefer Orange" and the green; "REA Green", which kinda makes sense when you think about it. There was also a good article about one restored in Air + Space a few years back. I'll see if I can find the issue if you like.

Air Classics magazine had an article on a flyable restored one in the Pacific NW.  I'll be interested in seeing this one finished!

I broke out the kit last night, and I have a MAJOR complaint!

The box!

Seriously, I'm delighted with the kit, but the box is/was a flimsy end opener that got crushed under some other kits. The model looks ok, except I'm missing one of the two lower wing halves.

I suppose I know where it is, so tonight I have to disassemble the stash (only 40+ kits) and find where the dern thing went to. And it's tiny, like my pinkie finger.

Yesterday I sent an email to CMR 'fessing up that I lost a part. Today they sent me a new one.

Great service!

Gee, my box is a clamshell opening type!  I do have a few complaints, but still looks like a fantastic kit.  The struts look really flimsy and I am contemplating replacing the cabanes with brass.

I don't have either kit, but for reference purposes, if you live in the Detroit area, the Henry Ford Museum has a restored Boeing 40B on display.  Also, the October, 1986 issue of FSM has an article on scratchbuildiing a 1/32 scale 40B-4 mail plane. The article includes good 3-views.

Looking forward to pics of  your builds.

My new lower wings arrived today, courtesy of Petr at CMR. Fine folks. As he put it "I understand your problem being a modeler too so I will send this replacement part free of charge  as our "CMR service" for our customers!"
