Boeing 40B cabane struts
Posted by Don Stauffer on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 9:22 AM

I think I am missing the cabane struts.  Unfortunatey the kit has no parts numbers indicated on the sprues, and no table of strut lengths.  There are a LOT of struts on this thing.  But I think from measurements I have all but the cabane struts.

If anyone else has this kit- have you identified the cabane struts and are they on a seperate sprue?  I found two groups of struts, accounted for all of them, but still missing the cabanes (four pieces).

Actually, I had been thinking of building brass ones anyway, since I was afraid the spindly struts would make the top wing a little fragile. I had decided to try the kit struts first.  Now, I may be forced back to the brass idea.

I sure wish CMR would have included, on the instructions, some way to identify which strut goes where.

I'm curious to know your conclusion, because it's a puzzle. Here is what I think, from left to right:

pair of lower wing to fuse struts (one side)

two pair interplane struts (inner?)

antenna pole

two pair interplane struts (outer?)

pair of lower wing to fuse struts (one side)

and on the second tree:

pair of tailplane struts (rear)

pair of tailplane struts (forward)

two pair of cabane struts (don't know front from back)

I have come to agree with you.  What threw me was expecting a locating pin on the side of one end of the cabane, since it touches the cowl almost parallel (at least at a very acute angle.  See my comments on the WIP post.

Well, I got the top wing on yesterday.  I started by assuming the outer interplane struts as the reference.  I supported the top wing with blocks between wings while I got the inner set of interplane struts in place. I found them too long by about a sixteenth of an inch.  No problem, I can always shorten them (which I did).

Then went to install cabanes.  They were way too short, by about 3/16 to 1/4 inch.  Now, struts too short are a bit of a problem!  I ended up starting a set of scratch struts.

If the cabane struts are the correct length, which may be the case, looking at wing gap compared to two-view scale drawing included, then both sets of interplanes are too long!  This wing would be very difficult to install with cabane struts first (they lean inward towards center, so wings would rotate in roll axis, sort of, with just the cabanes.  As it is, even with the interplanes on, the top wing is very floppy (it is heavy, solid resin).  I am going to do all the bracing rigging on the interplanes before trying to install the cabanes.

Found the kit cabane struts too short!  I chose the outermost interplane struts as the reference.  Found the inner interplane struts too long, but trimming to length is not hard.  But, then found the kit cabanes too short.  That IS a problem- hard to lengthen struts.  I guess the interplanes should NOT have been used for reference but I think it would have been extremely hard to mount the wings using the cabanes first.

Anyway, I scratched new ones out of strip styrene.  These plus the kit resin interplanes are very weak, and the wing rigging will be VERY functional :-)  I have it almost rigged- the rigging for the last cabane rigging is drying now.  Model looks pretty good.  Now for LG and control surface rigging- then putting engine and exhaust on.
