Aftermarket Floats?
Posted by rodc on Sunday, February 6, 2011 6:17 PM

I want to build a Cessna 180 floatplane but cannot find a 180 with floats.  The new Revell-Monogram SSP Cessna 180 does not have floats.  The only other 180 that came with floats was Monogram's 1960's vintage kit.  I have sourced a couple of these and they are pricey.

Anyone know of an aftermarket supplier of floatplane floats that I could mate with the Revell 180 kit?  The one problem I do foresee is that the Revell 180 is 1/41 scale!

Any helpful suggestions appreciated.

That kit was recently released within the past five years. Check eBay they pop up occasionally.

Thanks Gerald.  I think we are talking about the same kit as shown in the link below.  If not, do you have any other details?

There is a store that has kits that I will check to see if they have one. Its a country store that has a selection of old kits. If I find one there I will snatch it up.

I too am building the Cessna 180/185 kits, I actually loaded up on a armload of the new old releases. I also bought the Revell 1:32 Piper Super Cub on floats. (After comparing the mounting points are very close), with a little scratch work they should pass muster. (I'm making a few resin copies for all my 180/185's) I did have the original release round top (cap?) floats but I couldn't bring myself to use them and tossed them in the bin about a month ago....drat!

Gerald,

I would appreciate that very much provided of course the price isn't too steep!

Does it have to be a 180/185?  Minicraft has a 1/48 1/72 float plane that's a fun little kit.  I had a lot of fun with mine.

I have a Norseman bush plane on route that is 1/72 scale w/ floats. I plan on building the version on skis and would mail out the floats if that helps.

I have thought about the Minicraft kits but would really love to keep the plane I am modelling (the 180) as accurate as possible.  I guess at some point if I cannot get the old Monogram 180 kit for a reasonable price, I may need to look at Minicraft.

Thanks for your comments.....

Thanks for the offer for the floats SuppressionFire but scale will be too far off since the Cessna 180 I can get without floats is ~1/41 scale.

I have gotten my hands on a pair of the floats for the Cessna you are working on. They are in rough shape, no spreader bars, no mounting struts, no water rudders, the amphibious wheels are gone, however to make up for the losses, they do have glue smears multiple layers of old paint etc. etc.  A lot of work to make right, but thats what modelers do, They are yours if you want them.

I appreciate the offer crisp.........as daunting as it is!  I have my eye on a complete kit as we speak......just need to make sure I can get it at a reasonable price.  Don't throw away the floats......I might just need them.  I'll let you know for sure in a couple of days!

I appreciate it......
