Zvezda 1/144 787 All Nippon Airways
Posted by Chris_in_Japan on Friday, September 16, 2011 7:37 PM

Here is my latest build. It is the Zvezda kit with aftermarket decals for ANA.

I wanted to do this livery for two reasons. One my love for Japanese airlines. And two, because it being the first Dreamliner to be put into service. (Well maybe not this exact aircraft. But you get what I mean).

It took me about a month to finish, but was started while we were still in Japan. Since being home, I was able to put a few minutes in a day, and here is my result.

Nice build!  The 787 is a nice looking airplane.   How did the kit build up for you?

The kit went together quite nicely. Although I will say that the plastic is a little soft.. Other than that, simple assembly with even simpler instructions. .. Will see how my Zvezda 767 is like. Although it seems to have the same plastic also..

Thanks for the info.  I think Revell-Germany released the same kit.  I wonder if the plastic they use is any better.  Either way I wanna pick up one....or two.   Post some pics of your 767 build too.

Lovely job, Chris.  It looks great!

I work for Boeing in Melbourne in the 787 Planning department...we make the 787 flaps, ailerons and flaperons there...but...do you know if anyone makes decals in the roll-out livery?  I notice that the a/c reg on your model is a US number...the delivered a/c is JA801A, and the livery on the first a/c is quite different.

Hey...it's not a criticism...not at all...I've always been impressed by your models...but I'd LOVE to see (or make!) a model of the first production aircraft delivered....I kinda have a vested interest, you see.

Cheers, LeeTree

Hey, no insult taken mate!.. In fact I just went with what was on the sheet...

Are the decals that come with the Zvezda kit the "roll out" markings?

If so, you can have mine..

The roll out livery was very different...and it looks good - but so does your model.

Thanks for posting the pics, Chris.

Mate, if you want to do the very first 787. Then I have the decals for that. The only problem is, that you have to paint the blues, as the decals only give you the white markings.

Super nice 787!

I work just down the road from the new assembly plant going up here in Charleston and this is quickly going to become my favorite planes.  Especially if I get the Boeing job I applied for.Bow Down  My local shop has the Zvezda 787 and 767 and I want to get both but I still fear the gloss white so even the airliners I already have have yet to be touched.

Again, great buils.

Well, my secret is that I never use gloss.. I always just use a generic  flat white spray from the local hardware, and then a semi-gloss clear over the top..

Gloss is way too fiddly and time consuming..

Just saw that ANA is getting its first 787 today, Sept 26, 2011.

Though the first route isn't scheduled till Nov.  WOW a month to get used to the thing.  They might even have their second one by then.

Try using the decals from  SKYLINE DECALS, its a beautifull set in which you can built  two versions, the roll out one without the stencils or use the stencils for the other version.  The set also has a photoedge plate for adding additional details as antennas.  This set you can buy in the U.S. from Rusell Brown at airlinehobby@cox.net.     As for white paint I use Model Master's Insignia White FS 17875 with three or four drops of light blue in order to have a whiter look and keep the paint from getting that ivorish look as time gors by.  The decals go on nicely as the carrier film is very strong, just follow the instructions.
