Another one that some of you may be aware of:

It is said that Japanese script version of the name ANA (All Nippon Airways) can be read as "All day empty" in Chinese.

Would the person who changed the acronym for QANTAS to *** instead of *** (and I did the PC brigade the courtesy of stating that they may be offended by some of the acronyms which are in the context of their time) have the courtesy to let me know just why they didn't bother to contact me before amending the post.

I've no intention of offending anyone, that's why I wrote the warning, but it seems that the PC brigade feel they can charge around amending people's work - and history for that matter - without so much as a by your leave.

One message to them GROW UP.

So, it seems the word "***" is banned on here.. Perhaps the mods need to read a dictionary.

From the Oxford English Dictionary:

*** - Strange, odd, eccentric, shady, homosexual, out of sorts, giddy,.

Both in terms of accepted English and in the context of the time the acronym was coined , the word that shalt not speak its name (at least on here) is a standard usage

It is not a "person" who makes a "PC" decision, and calling "PC" btw is an excuse for rude behavior, IMO.

It's an attempt to keep members, i.e. the likes of you and I, from insulting each other and igniting flame wars. We got nobody to blame but ourselves. This is an extremely civil forum however.

That's why a Nazi is ok, but *** are not.

Thanks for the heads up bondoman.  As someone who has spent his life writing essays, papers, copy and ads I find it appalling that a "robotic" so called "intelligence" can edit copy without reference to the author or to context.

You use the term "Nazi" as an example.  How pathetic that I can describe Hitler as a Nazi but I can't say that his henchmen, such as Goering, Himmler etc. were ***.

I don't have one for AirNZ but do have one for its former name TEAL:

Terrifying Electra Approach and Landing.  This refers to a strange training procedure where their Electras were positioned over the runway threshold at 140 knots and the power cut.  The aircraft would then drop straight down and a dead stick landing would be made.  After a total hull loss in 1965 (thankfully with no fatalities or even serious injury) this rather odd procedure was dropped from the training schedule.

You can't use that Quantas term with the EA-6B Prowler, either... Even though everyone who's ever been around 'em on US Navy carriers calls 'em  "Q ueers", and just as other aircraft got nicknames that weren't "official".. Like "Bug" (F/A-18), "Gator" (A-7, also: SLUF), "Tweet" (T-37), 'Poon (PV-2 Harpoon), Hummer (E-2C), and don't even think about referring to a MiG-15 by its NATO code-name...

THAT is what PC does for words.. Just because a word is associated with some word the PC crowd deems "offensive" (even though the meaning of the EA-6B's nick is quite different, actually meaning "Odd")...

Could also refer to the approach to wellington, or even queenstown. Wellington you come in over the harbour to land on a "Floating" runway. One end of the runway sticks out into the water, kinda freaky. Queenstown you make a sudden drop over the ridge of a mountain to get down low enough to land.

As near as I can tell, PC is an invention of Totalitarian regimes in terms of "speaking the party line".

It gained wide adoption by the left as a form of self satire, a means of reminding folks to break the mold. Most famously exploited in that Apple Superbowl ad.

Now I guess it means having the ability to run ones tongue at whatever speed one chooses. All well and good, except that people now seem to speak more before they think, esp. on the www.

For my part, being a good English Northerner, brought up to call a spade a shovel, PC is something that I first used around 1983 and ditched for laptops and notebooks half a decade ago.

I remember when the feminist branch of the PC brigade demanded the word Chairman be dropped in favour of the so called non-sexist word Chair.   This rebounded on one particularly vociferous female councillor in the NW of England who was somewhat overweight. and was, shall we say, well padded in the posterior.

Having been elected "Chair" of a particular committee she took her seat at the head of the committee table in a room where the chairs were notorious for being less than comfortable.  She was rather upset when a member of the opposition on the committee was heard to whisper as she sat down "at least one chair here has a decent cushion"

Also sometimes referred to as Tinker-toy Airlines. They changed their name to Texas International Airlines in the late 1960s, then merged with Continental in 1982.

BTW, just a quick note about language and the Nannybot. Yep, it does edit language as it's posted. It's there for a reason — to try and keep the FSM Forums free from puerile insults and to keep the place, for want of a better term — family friendly.
