Civil version of the XR-12?
Posted by Don Stauffer on Saturday, June 9, 2012 9:22 AM

I had long been interested in building a model of the Republic XR-12, a plane in competition with the Hughes XR-11 that Hughes crashed in (featured in the movie).  I knew there was a good book on the plane, and finally bought a copy.  I think that aircraft has to be about the most streamlined piston engined plane ever built.

When I got the book, lo and behold it turns out Republic had plans to market an airline version of this very fast four-engined aircraft.  The book shows two great liveries on drawings- Pan Am and my favorite, AA.  Now I have to decide- do I want to build it as the military recon version, or as the "never really was" airliner.

Don,

You're probably already aware that ANiGRAND makes a 1/72nd resin kit of the XR-12 but,

just in case you haven't seen it, here goes...

It looks like an easy conversion to the proposed civillian version, too.

All the best

Yes I am aware of it but two problems.  For planes that big I have to go with 1:144.  My collection has gotten out of hand.  No more 1:32 of any size, and in others I only do 1:72 for stuff Beech D-18 and smaller, everything else is 1:144.  Second, I think Anigrand is a bit pricey.  I don't buy much in complete resin kits- I'll pick up a resin part or conversion if it isn't too expensive.  I find basswood much cheaper than resin :-)
