Certain kinds of planes
Posted by tankerbuilder on Saturday, November 3, 2012 9:00 AM

I don,t build many "things with wings" but, when I do it,s usually airliners.Does anyone make 1/144scale models of the "COMET " and other early british civilian jets. The same question applies to the early BRITISH and AMERICAN turbo-props as well as some of the older pre-turbo aircraft? I specifically am looking for the D.C. 6-6B and D.C.7 and 7c by DOUGLAS.the BRITISH turboprop, that stayed BRITISH and any airliners they had(BRITISH BUILT ) before 1964. I also am looking for a 1/144 C-46 civilian version.  help !     TANKER-builder

I know there are some nice DC-6s and DC-7s out there, but don't remember which versions.  I am also looking for a C-46- someone told me there was one, but I forget whose, and it is very hard to find (I want to do the Buffalo model).

Don. I think Platz did a 1/144 C-46.  Roden has recently done a DC-7 and Minicraft did the DC-4 and DC-6 fairly well.  Unlike their DC-3 and Electra.

I have built a scale1/144 Comet 4B.  Went together great.  Looks good with the Capital Airlines livery.

I'm in the process of building a scale 1/144 Bristol Britannia model now.

I have done the Roden DC-7, and felt the kit was a bit so-so.  Not too bad but the engines were pretty crappy.  Wish Engines and Things would do some of the larger big-round-engines in 1:144.

Don,

Williams Brothers does a 1/72nd C-46.  The kit I have has markings for early and late USAAC, Nationalist Chinese Air Force, and, Flying Tiger Line  The kit is VERY nicely detailed, molded in light gray styrene with options for 3 and 4 blade props,  both rubber and plastic wheels, the engines have separate cylinder banks, and,  there is pretty nice flight deck detail but the main cabin is just the floor.  There is no provision for opening  the main cabin hatch and, it looks like opening it would be pretty difficult.  As with all Williams Brothers kits, there are good instructions for the modifications required for the different versions.

There is also a limited edition of the kit that is molded in a nightmarish shade of blue.  I saw one at the Glenn Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport, Ny.

All the best

Ray

BTW...The 1/72nd C-46 is almost as large as the 1/48th C-47!
