1/32nd Scale Piper Cub w/Tundra Tires

This is my land based version of the 1/32nd scale Revell Super Cub.  The subject is modeled after a Cub based in Yellowknife, NWT.  I wanted to build it with the tundra tires and knowing there weren't any aftermarket tires available for this kit I decided to build them myself.  I started by carving a block of balsa wood to size and doing the rest of the shaping by mounting the block on a Dremel moto-tool (using it as a lathe).  After I got it where I wanted it, I cast the blasa wood master in a RTV rubber mold.  I then used the mold to cast resin wheels.  Unfortunately, on one of the casting attempts, the rubber mold tore so I no longer have it.   The seats that are supplied with the kit has harness molded in so I decided to scratch build the pilots seat and left the rear seat out which allows more room for cargo on the real aircraft.  I added numerous details to the engine and cockpit.  The landing gear structure was partially scratch built from plastic rod and the spinner was scratchbuilt.

This plane competed at last years IPMS Nationals in Orlando and was awarded the "Best Canadian Subject" award (picture is attached) by the guys from IPMS Canada (thanks to Steve and the rest of the guys from IPMS Canada).
