Thanks for your comments, gents. Yes, I am aware of the Roden kit, but I saw an AMT kit at a super-cheap price and went for it, as all the Roden kits I have seen cost a fair bit more. I've read the complains about the AMT kit, and I think I lucked out by getting one without too many of the faults often mentioned, such as warped wings. But the AMT kit is definitely a bit second-rate, and lots of filing and filling was needed.

As for the rigging, it's real wire, the thinnest I could find, cut precisely to length. I made several mistakes along the way that made life more difficult. The kit provides spots to drill holes to accept the wire, but I stupidly didn't drill the holes at the correct angle, so the wires could just slip into place. That was Big Mistake number one. That meant I had to cut the wires to a perfect length, so they just sat resting on the edges of each drilled hole.

Big Mistake number two was to attach the wires (using fast-drying superglue) in the wrong order. On each side one "pair" of wires sits inside the other, outer pair. Foolish me only found out my mistake in the middle of the whole job, so getting the second of the inner pair of wires in place was a tricky operation. Thank goodness for those "helping hands" things with alligator clips that hold things in place for you.

Nice job on an old kit!  How did you do your rigging?

Looks great!  There is also the Roden kit, a far superior kit to the AMT one.

1/48 Beechcraft Staggerwing

Having started out building models two years ago, I am now at the stage were I’d like to build nicer versions of some favourite planes which I built early on. For starters I’ve built my all-time-favourite plane, the Beechcraft Staggerwing, otherwise known as the Beech 17. This model is in 1/48 scale (my original attempt was in 1/72 and was horribly rough).

As I love the way the plane looks with its wheels up, that's how I built it and am going to display it. So, for these photos I’ve done some basic deep-etching in Photoshop to show it “flying”.

Here it is front-on, where you can see the little man this kit (by AMT) gives you. Those pairs of double cross braces were so incredibly difficult to do! Don't think I'll be trying that again, anytime soon ...

And here it is "flying" under my bookshelves. I do like 1/48 scale, much better level of detail than 1/72.

Finally, I thought I'd have a go at a simple Art Deco poster of the Staggerwing, just for fun

I've tried to make it look like an illustration rather than a photo, using a couple of the filters that come with Photoshop.
