Minicraft - Surprised !
Posted by Tanker - Builder on Sunday, April 17, 2016 10:49 AM

Hi ;

    I recently bought some old Minicraft planes in two scales and boy what a surprise .A 1/144 F-111 that has swing wings ? Now for the second .A Piper Super Cub . Here's a venerable bird indeed .But ,It's all there in finely molded parts ( even the tiny inside frames ).

   .Well molded and correct for the year ! How do I know ? I used to own one , First plane actually . I am quite surprised by these .and wonder how many different molds they used .After all they just sell them .I believe the molds are now in China .

      I may have to buy more .    T.B.

There is a big difference between the kits they have been selling for years, and the new ones in the last year or two. It is obvious they are using the new molding technology that companies are going too recently. Really nice detail in engines.  I want to make their new ones with at least one cowl panel open to see those engines (though I will have to scratch the cooling duct panels).

Don !

 I was surprised by that fact .The " Super Cub " was in 1/48 and it even had ( or has ) a multiple part engine .Very well done ! . I think it's going to be fun to build !  T.B.

And an advantage with the Super Cub is that it is a tail-dragger.  The 150 and 172 kits have beautiful engines too, but the tail is very heavy.  According to the instructions, if you want it to sit without bracing the tail up, you must omit the engine, as you need all the volume of the engine compartment for counterweight!  They should mold those engines out of pewter or some other heavy metal alloy!  I put my 172 on a base and glued wheels to base!

 There's an idea ! I guess I'll have to get out the lead pot and mold stuff . T.B.
