DC-4 kit

Speaking of all this Earnest Gann stuff, I noticed that Pointerdog 7 has some Transocean and Topac decals for sale on ebay. They are for the 1/144 DC-4 but maybe he would make some for the Revell 1/72 DC-4. We all might ask if he would consider this-----

 Remember too , back then the pilots could have children sit in their seat and " Fly " the plane . Little fuss , a pair of plastic wings with Junior Pilot on them and best behaved kid on the plane .

   How do I know ? Got three pairs of wings . United , American and Capitol . Close to unreadable , But they go in the urn with me . 

     Also , That experience made sure I got my first Solo by the time I went in the service .Couldn't fly for them , but did a lot after I got into civilian life again . Never did forget all those interesting dials and guages . T.B.

    You know of course , that looks a great deal like the one that came with the four model set that Revell released .It had the plane , the S.S. United States , The Matson C-3 Freighter and a car .  T.B.

Mike at Vintage Flyers has redone the DC-4 decals for Matson to fit the Revell kit, He will probably adapt the others as well.  He is very open to suggestions.

I have the Minicraft DC-4 kit in 1:144, with AA livery decals.  I am hoping to scale up those decals twice size to use on my Revell kit.  I have done some restoration of bad decals before, and hope some of the graphics software techniques can reduce problems of such a big scaleup.

Looking online there are or were many different airline decal sets for this aircraft in 1/72.

I think Vintageflyerdecals is one printer.

I suppose that they were for the Mach 2 C-54.

From Chris' link you can see Revell has switched sprue F with the cabin interior halves, and switched sprues L with paratroop seats for sprues M of passenger seats.

Almost all DC-4s were built as C-54s.

Here's the instructions from the new Balair scheme. I got the Air Force boxing but now think I'll have to get the Balair as well. Hobby Lobby still carries the C-54 but I haven't seen the DC-4 there yet.

Don, can you link your thread on the changes needed for the DC-4, I don't recall seeing it.

There's a great icing story as I recall.

 

 

Indeed!  It is non-fiction (supposedly), and is a collection of short tales.  The incident the movie was based on is only one incident out of a number that make up the book.  I have read all of Gann's books- some are better than others, but not a one of them is a pass up.

With all this talk about TOPAC airlines and Ernie Gann, 'Fate is the Hunter' is a great book about the early airlines and the ATC in WWII. You can get it on Amazon and other places for a few bucks. 

Well worth the read but be prepared to have time to read it almost in one sitting----you won't be able to put it down!

Looking at Scalemates, over the years there have been all kinds of DC-4 1/72 airline decals for the crappy Mach 2 kit.

 

Very nice!  I have both the Minicraft DC-4 and DC-6 in my stash.  I may build that -4 before I start the 1:72 scale kit, to see what it should look like, and to try some things.  I am wondering, too, if I can scale up a scan of the AA decals in the 1:144 kit to get decals for the 1:72 model.  That is a 2:1 scaleup though, so the resolution may suffer too much.

Just saw an ad for it in the latest Squadron catalog, just after I posted.  Going to order it ASAP.  I have been following the C-54 build in the Aircraft forum, and hope the DC-4 kit is as nice.

I got one from Tower Hobbies, it came about ten days ago, I think.  Going to put another Ernie Gann scheme on it, Matson Airlines.

Double post, but a quick search for this aircraft seems to indicate it was released last year.  Amazon has it listed for about $57.  Any comments?

 Are you alluding to  " The High and The Mighty " ?  Sounds like it . T.B. 

The Revell website lists a civilian DC-4 as a new release for February. It's in the markings of Balair, which seems pretty obscure.

I'm hoping some aftermarket decal company will sell a sheet to put that kit in the authentic markings of Trans-Orient Pacific. And if you don't know what I'm talking about, your credentials as an aviation movie buff are suspect.

Reading other forums, it sounds as though the big job is a commercial interior.

The floor flips over to a commercial layout, but the cargo interior has separate interior cabin halves with ribs that will have to go.

Making new ones would be very hard to do, but they can't be omitted.
