Understand completely. I am not allowed to paint in the house. Anything. Ever. Except little tiny jobs with a small bottle and paint brush. All teh spraying takes place in a huge booth I built in the garage, with ventilation and a mask. So its prep, then inventory, pack it up, head down the stairs, and out to the garage. At least I get some exercise! Keep up the good work!

Thank you! Yes I do like the AK metal. I’ve actually never used Alclad. I try to avoid lacquer paints since I work out of a fairly small apartment space and need to keep the partner happy. The only thing that really smells is the AK xtreme cleaner fluid. But this is tolerable since the metal-painting process is relatively short compared to other painting tasks. I also still use a vented artograph spray booth.

Big SmileYes Very nice work indeed Jon! You've done well in the mixture of kits, too. Who knew the Airfix kit could look so good!!??! Love the Delta widget scheme, too. Something about the widgets make the airplane look fast sitting still. The paint matching looks spot on...you're the second model this week I've seen that has used the AK metal, and it looks really really good. I primarily use Alclad, but I'd like to try the AK and see what comes of it. Thank you for the detailed account of the build, too. Inspirational. I'm off to the workbench!!

the inner wing parts are different mixes of tamiya grays/blues/and aluminum to try and get the corrogard look.

does this answer your question? if not let me know! thanks!

No, I meant the wood base that the model sits on.  It looks like the top of the base may have been veneer work, with a darker inlay or something like that, going to the front left corner.

Don, I’m not 100% sure what you mean, but for the base I used gray primer during the sanding and smoothing process. I then did a couple layers of white stynlrez primer and then a couple coats of tamiya gloss white acrylic on the top half. For the bottom I used stynelrez gloss black primer. I wet sanded with micromesh set. Then applied decals. and then foam brushed two layers of Future over the whole fuselage which acted as a top coat for the white and a final gloss “primer” over the black in preparation for the metallic bottom. I put no final top coat over the metallic areas.

That is a beauty!  Really like the variations of natural metal.  Very nice.

Thanks,

John

Very nice!  The NMF areas are outstanding.

Curious about the base- there seems to be either a veneer inlay or a step in the top surface.  Can you explain more about the base?

Impressive build and hard to tell it's a 1/144 scale cause it looks larger, it looks like the real thing. Your paint and decals are right on. Well done!

Super work.  The L1011 was a great airliner to travel in when they were new.

Very nice. Your sharp curved demarcations are impressive, especially so in this scale.

Hello all,

Here is my L1011 in classic Delta livery! Overall it was a fun build, but it took quite a bit of fixing/sanding/scrubbing/etc. I’m finding out that’s just par for the course.

https://postimg.cc/gallery/37kgg84x0/

The kit was mostly from Airfix but I used the engines from an Eastern Express kit. Scale is 1/144. The insides of the wings were reinforced with thin metal wire and a mixture of slo-zap and acrylic nail (cosmetic nail) powder. Thanks to Paul Budzik and his Scale Model Workshop for this idea. I have no access to dental powder but the nail powder seems to have done a decent job for my purpose.

I used plastic sheets to redo all the gear doors in a thinner fashion. All raised panel lines were sanded off and I re-scribed everything. It was my first time doing this and I’m all around happy with it and learned a better feel for future scribing. (less deep lines seem to be better in this scale).

Delta decals are from the eastern express kit and details provided by Nazca. For the paint scheme I only used decals for the widgets and logos. I opted to paint the blue and red stripes instead of using decals. A Nix mini color sensor and some experimentation were used to match paint color to the decal color. I took a snippet of the decal to a copy shop and blew it up several times larger over white paper to get a sample size for the color sensor. I then used Tamiya acrylics. Both blue and red needed a mix of three colors each. I think they turned out fairly close.

The fuselage bottom was primed black gloss followed by Future. I then finished it with AK Xtreme metal chrome. I have yet to find a clear top coat that maintains the full metallic luster so I left it bare However I did a gentle polish with novus #1 and old (clean) t-shirt. Any recommendations for topcoats over AK metal are welcome.

Comments and critique are welcome!

Thanks and Happy Modeling....let’s keep cranking out some more airliners. They’re so pretty
