Eastern Express MD-80
Posted by Challenger350Pilot on Sunday, March 29, 2020 11:08 AM
This is the Eastern Express 1/144 scale MD-80 finished in the earlier American Airlines livery, as ship #567. N567AM was the last MD-80 delivered brand new to American in 1992 from the factory in Long Beach, California, serving well for 24 years before being retired in 2016. She was stored in ROW before being returned to service in 2017 as a cargo carrier still active and operating south of the border.

This model was a first for me in a few areas; my first attempt at an Eastern Express model, use of acrylic paints (I usually use enamels), and first use of Xtreme metal (I usually use Alclad) for the finish. Quite a few challenges for sure, but the model came together well in spite of the issues that the EE kit presents. Painting and finishing challenges were new to me, as I am sure they are old to many, but didn’t prove impossible…just different from what I have done in the past. Good learning experiences and I would most definitely build this kit again.

To mix the AA gray I used Tamiya X-1 and X-2 until it “looked about right,” using photos of the actual airplane in sunlight from different angles. Tamiya gray surface primer, Tamiya TS-14 gloss black as a base coat for the metal finish. Xtreme metal airbrushed along with light polishing to achieve the natural metal finish. Flying Colors details; Draw Decals details, cheat lines, and livery markings; Authentic Airliners life like windows; Platz PE parts for the landing gear, antennae, and pitot tubes.

Of the pictures below, a few are taken while she was still on the workbench; the rest were taken on a bright sunny day while clouds occasionally passed overhead, giving a shaded look to some of the shots.

Hope you enjoy!

While I am really not into commercial aircraft, I think your build looks fantastic!

Great job....

Thanks,

Hi John...Thank you! No, this is the Eastern Express kit. I began this project with a Minicraft kit, but switched to the EE one, because I like the detail a bit more that is molded into the plastic.

Thank you, Ben. Commercial models are so different from everything else...in their own unique way.

nice work, looks great!

If you don't mind me asking, did you put any clear coat over the AK metal? I am also using the AK for my current project and debating on whether or not to clear coat

I used Future...brushed it on. It did have a slight effect on the shine of the Xtreme metal paint that I didn't like much, but I couldn't leave the surface without a clear coat or there would have been water spots from decal application. Applied Future after completion, too, which sealed everything up and gave an even shine. While the Future works pretty well, I would recommend the Alclad clear coat.

Well done! I'll soon be spray painting an Academy F-86F with a glossy Tamiya aluminum spray paint. It will be my first attempt (as an adult) at using metallic spray paint. I can only hope my model turns out as nicely as yours.

On the bench: A diorama to illustrate the crash of a Beech T-34B Mentor which I survived in 1962 (I'm using Minicraft's 1/48 model of the Mentor), and a Pegasus model of the submarine Nautilus of 20,000 Leagues Under the Seas fame.

Wonderful work. You really did a great job. YesYes I would not know where to start on such a paint job.

That first picture in particular looks so realistic for a moment I thought it was the 1:1 version.

And that paint scheme brought back lots of memories. Strange, nostalgia but from a time not all that long ago. Not to me, anyway. Not sure in the 1:1 world I ever realized what a beautiful paint scheme that was.

Thanks for a real eye-opener.

Thanks, Bob! Hope your spray painting goes well for you. I actually tested the Tamiya metallic silver for this particular build; its pretty good, but far from a bright polished finish that I was looking for. Seems that only the aribrushed Xtreme metal paints or Alclad enamels and lots of proper preparation will bring the polished look. You'll be pleased with the Tamiya; its very good...just not as shiny.

Thanks, Greg! Appreciate your kind words. One starts at the same place always...the beginning...by studying, practicing, making mistakes, learning from successes, and finally developping a technique that works for you. Believe me, the finish didn't come quickly nor easliy. And I'm gald the model brought back some good memories...that would be the highest compliment. And I do agree...the old paint scheme with teh stripes and AA on the tail were so classy and clean...way better than what we see now.

Had to join up just to respond to this post - amazing work that brings back many memories for me. While traveling for work I've had over 560 flights on AA MD-80's - I've flown on about 65% of the entire fleet they had. Bravo!

Very impressive! So you probably flew on #567 at some point, maybe even more than once. I'm really glad this brings back memories for you...hopefully they're good ones!

My records are incomplete, but for sure I flew her at least once - DFW-CMH on 12/10/13. Smile And yes, I miss the 2-seat side of the MD-80's.
