Doyusha 1/200 DC8-61 Japan Air Lines

It looks nice on Scalemates. Absolutely cram all of the weight you can into the nose.

Been working on the 8 bit by bit while finishing up the Glencoe/Hawk Vickers Viscount.  Got the fuse halves together and the cabin windows filled in.  Still have a bit more filler to add... it seems to shrink and dimple as it dries.  Not many parts in this kit, so should be a quick build, except for paint and finishing.  I'm applying lessons learned on the Viscount and tips and tricks learned here to hopefully make this one better.

Been doing a little work here and there, and have been thinking about paint.... I'm doing it gear-up, so no worries about trying to paint the tiny undercarriage, and at this scale, (and my skill level!) I'm not worrying about detail, as it will be on the stand. I do, however, want the paint to look beileveable, and my problem is how to mask the wing-to-body fairings. Masking at such a small scale and with such small curves is something I don't know how to do well. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Similar to the boot stripe on a ship.

Start with a very thin strip of tape, say 1/32" or so wide.Then repeat with a wider strip, say 1/16". You may be using segments at this point.

Now you can tile the mask with short  pieces of 9mm tape.

 Morrison's advice is solid. My take is to put foil chrome on it as the mask. This works for me.

So I've been scouring the internet for good pics of the wing-to-body fairings on a JAL DC-8-61, and they are hard to find.  I did, however find this very good pic of a UAL DC-8.  The WTB fairings are decidedly metal, and not painted grey.  Which makes me wonder, were JAL's painted grey.  If they are metal, it makes no sense that they would be, yet the instructions show them as grey...   Any fellow airliner enthusiasts out there able to enlighten me?  My life would be a whole lot easier if I didn't have to mask off the WTB fairings!

I'm sure those fairings are metal, they just contrast a little.

Those stretch jobs were a nightmare, although I always thought they looked good.

Thanks GM!  I found the same pic, and for sure, the fairing at the LE of the wing is metal.  Have not been able to find a good pic of a JAL bird showing the fairing at the TE, but it's hard to imagine it would be anything other than metal now that I've done some research.
