Tanker-Builder

She didn't want land, unless under power to pull her to the ground. If I cut the power she would silently glide about twenty foot off the ground for about six or seven hundred feet it seemed. Ground effect is what they told me.

Most people in this situation would use a forward slip.  I faced a situation with my Ercoupe but since the rudder was tied to the ailerons (no rudder pedals) I could not slip either way.

Aha!

A long time ago my missus and I bought a Piper, An old Piper stashed in a closed trailer. We carefully, with some help from a neighbor who I promised to take up.(She did Photos from Airplanes) When we got this thing back together we discovered you sat one behind the other and had wood floorboards so's ya wouldn't put yer foot through the floor!

One of the folks sharing the Hangar suggested a Volks or Porsche engine for it ! I went with the Porsche engine and got her certified after an aero mechanic helped ne sort out some stuff. Boy! was she fun to fly and the Porsche gave just enough power. Typical Piper problem though. She didn't want land, unless under power to pull her to the ground. If I cut the power she would silently glide about twenty foot off the ground for about six or seven hundred feet it seemed. Ground effect is what they told me. Best first plane after learning how to fly.

I have seen a few other planes with Volks or Porsche power. Great little planes!

Finished cutting out the two sides and marking former locations.  Also been putting together the vW engine= this is as fare as it goes;\.  Remaing pitems are not used in this conversion or replaced with aftermarket items.

The Turbulent should be a great subject for scratchbuilding.

Yep. Lots of references online.  I am using the most accurate of model Turbulents to base airframe drawing.  Lots and lots of photos.

Not uncommon for aircraft to use boxer motors.  Should be an interesting build and fun project.

Thanks,

John

This project started out in a funny way.  My model car club (RPM) frequently calls for topic chalenges.  The newest one is the VW one - build anything related to VW.  I asked about a VW powered homebuilt aircraft.  The club agreed.

This will be a 1:24 scale, scratch project, as that would match most available engines.  A friend in another club gave me a spare 3D printed one.  I have the drawings finished, and ready to cut wood!
