When I am painting figures I glue them to clay poker chips for easy handling. These can be easily painted and you can get a bunch very cheaply at discount department stores like Big Lot's or Family Dollar.

Michael's and AC MOore have plenty of cheap unstained wood pieces in a variety of sizes.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Get your chess board first.  Size of the squares on the board will determine the size of the bases for your figures.

Dunno how fancy you wanna get, but Hobby Lobby sells some really nice pre-cut wood flats that can be used for bases.  Average 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" sizes, some a little bigger, some smaller.  They come in bags of about a hundred pieces and are sanded and stainable...

Base for figures

I've completed a number of 54 mm Civil war figures and would now like to start using them for a great chess set.  I am looking for a plain base - maybe and inch high and 2 to 3 inches in diameter to start setting to completed figures on.  Obviously I will need 32 pieces and I don't care what type of material they are made of.

Can anyone offer suggestions as to a source??

Thanks
