Warhammer Fantasy 6th Edition Boxed Set
Posted by David Voss on Saturday, November 29, 2003 11:10 AM
I finally picked up the 6th edition boxed set (25% off sale on GW stuff at the LHS). Very cool!! I haven't had time to read through the rulebook, but my first impression from looking through all the materials and stuff which comes in the box, it's a big improvement from the 5th edition boxed set.

The templates are the plastic ones vs. the cardboard ones. The getting started booklet is a lot better. Goes into depth in how to assemble the figures. The Empire and Orc army are a better selection -- basic units, a command group, a general and artillery. -- seems like a better assortment of figures to start out with than what came in the 5th Edition box.

I don't know, the game seems a bit friendlier than before.

I have a ton of figures from before (extra skinks, lizards, brettonian archers, empire troops, etc) so I haven't bought any new units besides Lord of the Rings and a few blister packs here and there. I noticed with these new figures, there aren't any slottabases. Are they doing away with slottabases now? I think I like them without the slots.

The only complaint I have (it's minor), the Army books don't seem as full of material as the 5th edition were. I have to take another look, but the new Empire book didn't seem to have all the lore and didn't have all the characters the old one did. Oh well, it's kind of good it's not an exact duplicate of the prior edition. Gives me a reason for hanging onto pior edition books.

The only other problem was the box was missing the 3 boar figures. Not a problem though. A quick phone call to their Customer Service, told them what I was missing and they told me it would be in the post come Monday.

I want to say I'm glad I took the advice of demono69 and picked up the boxed set vs. just the rulebook. Thanks, demono69!!

Hey Voss, Deb and I picked up that set last week too. I havent had a chance to read through the Yellow Pages sized rule book yet, but I plan on doing so this week (while at work ofcourse ) Some of the guys at the LHS chipped in and bought the figure sets out of it, so I got the book and everything for $30.00 , same as book itself. Ive been busy playing with the BloodBowl team for the past few weeks. Its pretty fun too, and its a good way to learn some of the basics with warhammer.Havent played an official game yet , but I hope to do so this weekend.

Glad to hear that I was of some use to somebody on this forum. I'm glad that you're happy with your purchase, David, and I'm looking foward to playing a match against you even more. Just started to build a new Wood Elf Army, so we'll have to see how it's going in a year.
Lots of changes over the 5th Edition. New magic rules, new items, new everything! Some of your troops you'll be able to use, some you won't. If you pick up the Army books, the history of each race is done quite well, but not necessarily in time-line form. Most of the histories are now done as short stories or litle dialogs in the margins. They've also released the Annuals and General's Compendium to flesh out the stories and races a bit more.
Goos luck on your builds, and may there be Skulls for the Throne!

Well...while out and about Yesterday and Today...I discovered that No one sells GW in Pensacola anymore...TBS comics closed its doors in late October...Bill is getting out of it as well....so Im not sure where to go except for the Hobby Town in Mobile...Bill however is considering an offer I made him on his remaining inventory...not that I need all of it...but it couldnt hurt! and if he accepts my offer I'll be a step up!

Well there is one minor thing I don't care for. When I skimmed through the Lizardmen book I noticed the lack of short bows on the skinks. Looks like skinks with shortbows can only be played from the Southlands. Investigating further, Southlands doesn't allow for a lot of Saurus' as Lustria, nor are many of the special/rare units allowed. Evil [}:)]

Oh well. I found a forum (The Pyramid Vault 2) for people playing the Lizardmen Army which has a lot of good stuff. I have to go back and read up some more to see if there's hope for my 130+ skink shortbow figures. Black Eye [B)]

They are underpowered in the new edition. They are working on uodates fro this, but only time will tell when it is released. Why bring an army to a game that is almost guaranteed to lose? They really need to release more options for the High Elves, as they are a pretty cool looking army.

Shame to hear about the Lizzies, Dave. I don't play them, so I didn't realize the drawback of the Skink Archers. They more than make up for it with the Slaan Mage Priest, though! I've never seen anything that powerful! That thing is insane, and nearly impossible to kill!

Be sure to let me know about that inventory, Chris. Right now, my Wood Elf Army consists of 3 miniatures! Not exactly a battleworthy force... Then again, I still have to wait for the Army book to be released. I figure sometime in 2005...

Chris, did you buy the store yet? Wink [;)]

BTW...quick update on the missing pieces. The GW customer service rep said they'd be in the post on Monday. Sure enough. Mailed on the 1st and arrived today. Most excellent.

One good thing (among others) about GW: They have one of the best Customer Service Departments I've ever seen. When I was missing some parts to a dreadnaught a ways back, they received the missing parts within 3 days, plus extra pieces for conversion, and a coupon for $10! That's what I call trying to please the customer!
