1/35 Soviet-Afghan War Infantry
Posted by mg.mikael on Sunday, January 11, 2009 6:15 PM

In Febuary's issue of FSM, in the New Products section, I noticed the 1/35 Tamiya Modern Soviet Infantry-Soviet-Afghan War Item#89779. It sorta spiked my intrest because their doesn't seem to be many kits specifically made for this war and now I'm wondering, does this mean Tamiya might be soon offering more kits under the Soviet-Afghan War genre. Or was this just a random kit they made due to demand or something.Question [?] Any one have this kit or plan on getting it?

Were the original two ICM kits of good quality or were they of poor quality?

The quality is not bad- probably equal to early Dragon stuff, or a tad better.

If one wanted one of the ICM Sets, the Dragon online store has it on same for $7-and-change.  It's the sapper sight, which doesn't have the guys with the sniper rifle or the guy on the MG.

But it does have the donkey.  Laugh [(-D]

No to both... The old "Spetnatz" kit is adequate...

Well, my LHS finally got it in so I picked it up this weekend. The quality on the moldings looks quite nice!

Good deal stikpusher! How well historically do you feel they match up to the period?

And any chance that the weapons/equipment with some slight modification could bring them up to date?

...Or too 80s lol? You know- big hair ect. Laugh [(-D]

sorry, bad joke- I had to. But the other questions were serious I promise.

Well I am not overly familiar with current Russian uniforms/web gear and body armor. Several figures come with heagear options of helmet, boonie hat, or Russian type patrol cap. Some have the fatigue/BDU style uniform that could be painted as the current camo pattern or in the the Afghan era brown, while others are in the hooded camo oversuit (I dont know if that item is still in use in Russia). So yes, I think some could be updated to current era, while others are only Afghan era specific. But I really like the overall set of them. They look superior in molding to the original DML Spetsnaz set and a tad better then the later VDV Soviet Airborne troopers.

Very cool, great review! I think I'll go ahead and make the investment- split the figures (as no dio should ever have that many anywaw... and... I've totally never... had that may figures on a dio Whistling [:-^]) and stick a few modern and a few in the desert.

haha and glad to see my bad 80's joke didn't phase you Smile [:)]

Nah, the 80s joke did not bother me a bit... I loved the 80s... had some great times back then... as said in the opening monologue of "Farewell to the King", "... all that we remeber is the flare of our youth!"

That movie's almost as old as I am!

I'll have to check it out, I'm sorry to say I have not yet seen it. But definitly a good quote.
