Paints
Posted by gonzalef on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 12:55 PM
Hi,
I've been building planes for quite a while (10 + years) and now I want to try something different. I just bought a couple of resin figures as well as 2 plastic ones.
My questions is about what type of paints do I have to use? Where can I get them? specially for the resin figures.
Thanks

The figures will need to be cleaned & primed before you paint, especially the resin.  I use Floquil Grey primer (enamel) with an AB or Citadel White (acrylic) from a rattle can.  Both work well.  For the painting, Humbrol is hard to beat if you prefer enamel & Vallejo is my favorite acrylic.  Both are available from on-line sources.  I usually order from Squadron.

If your getting into resin kits you might want to pick up these videos.

David Fisher is one of the top painters in garage kits.

Complete how to starting with clean up all the way through painting techniques.

Covers construction. modifying, bases, air brushing, pastels, washes, glazing, etc.

While they are more targeted at monsters and fantacy figures all the techniques can also be used for military modeling as well.

He even does a custom diorama base for an Clint Eastwood figure.

Since you're just starting with figures, go with the best...Vallejo and Andrea, basically the same paint with slilghtly different palettes. Colorado Miniatures has the full line of Vallejo at a better price than Squadron gets for Andrea. The recommended thinner is distilled water, not soe proprietary alchemist's brew, they paint lasts forever inthe bottle, goes on smoothly, does't lift if the next brush stroke touches the previous. Also, consider investing in some Kolinski sable brushes. They are pricy but also last forever and more importantly, keep their point when painting.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Thank you guys for the advise, specially the videos. As soon as I got them I'll start to practice on the figures and I'll show here the results.
