Yes, as an armor crewman, our tank's packing list included the A and B duffle bags (each with a prescribed load out), an Alice pack (I think ours were small), a CVC bag, and a tanker's roll (the sleeping bag with sleeping mat stuffed in the water proof bag).

All of this was on the tank times four for each crewman.

The Large Ruck was standard issue in Light, Airborne, and Air Assault units. They were not issued in Mech or Armored units. Those usually have vehicles to haul the duffel bags. With the frame attached, it can carry pretty much your body weight in existence and mission gear. The large ruck is quite secure on the frame, and the straps aren't going anywhere. On the combat jumps into Grenada and Panama by the Rangers using these rucks, 100 lbs -150 lbs loads, mostly ammo and other munitions, was standard. If you're a radioman, it's less ammo, but the radio and spare batteries plus radio accessories make up for that load. It's a great piece of gear, and is more durable than the newer CFP-90 or MOLLE packs that have come along since the ALICE era. The internal and external frames on the newer packs tend to break, especially on landing impact during parachute operations.
Ive had my own large ruck for almost 40 years now, although it's hasn't had much use since I retired from the Guard in '07, aside from a few backpacking trips.

The Mediums are designed to go on the frame as well CapnMac82. I own 2 Medium packs and I had to put the shoulder straps on mine when not installed on the frame. And putting it on the frame was really fun(Sarcasm).

Yes, but the Large ruck has no top attachment point for straps without a frame... you can rig up something, but not to carry heavy loads

I think that is one of the reasons you don't see them as often and a major drawback as when attaching a medium to the frame the buckles on top serve to completely secure the top of the bag to the frame. If the large pack is missing those you are relying on only the D-Rings on the bottom to secure the pack to the frame. Really sounds like you really can't carry a heavy load with the large packs even with the frame.

CapnMac82

As a note, those are Large packs which have to be set on the Alice Pack Frame.

Medium packs can have shoulder straps installed directly, that was not an option with the Large Pack.
The Medium pack can be fitted to the frame, as well.

(That's the second pattern waist belt on the pack frame.)

Sorry for such a late replay and necroing such an old thread, but for anyone who happens on this discussion, Value Gear Details.  10 bucks USD will get you a pack of 18 Alice Packs in resin.

The large rucks are olive green, the medium rucks will be either olive green, more common, or woodland camo occasionally.

Hey gang,

I'm building an M1A2 1/35 Tamiya tank which has Alice packs but the instructions doesn't say what color it needs for painitng. I've been googling actual packs online and they seem to be either black or olive green. What do guys think?

Just get the 2nd set since you get 12 packs total. Right now I'm hoping someone come out with some resin or Injection plastic Alice Packs and the pack frame. There are some resin sets but they are pricey and might cost more than the Tamiya set.

Thanks Mikeym.  I had a feeling I would not find them seperate anywheres.  Guess I will just suck it up and pick the Tamiya kit up.

There are actually 3 Tamiya Modern Accessory sets. The first set contains the old ground effect simulator for the old 105 mm equipped M1 and M60 tanks and contains around 2 Alice Packs Set 2 is the more modern set and contains the IR IFF CIP panels and has 8 seperate Alice Packs and 4 paired packs. Set 3 which came out last year is the rerelease of set 1 with a added ICM US Infantry figure set. DML released a Desert Storm figure set back around 91-92 which also contain Alice Packs. I don't know of any other source of Injection molded Alice Packs.

1/35 Alice packs?
Posted by New Hampshire on Saturday, May 30, 2009 6:43 PM

Anyone know where I can get JUST 1/35 Alice Packs?  I know Tamiya makes a kit with them in there, but I already have an Italeri Modern Battle accessories kit, and buying the Tamiya on top of that seems a bit overkill.  I need at least three Alice Packs and am kind of hoping maybe some manufacturer out there offers JUST the packs (I know, its a stretch, but....)
