Feldgendarmerie 1/16
Posted by Pawel on Tuesday, June 9, 2009 3:34 AM

Hello all,

I recently completed a kit by Dragon, the 1618 "German Feldgendarme". My normal subject is Vietnam in 1:72 and 1:35 but this one was given to me by a friend who started to build it and then lost interest. So I cleaned it up, filled the gaps, and started painting. I made a sling for the MP-40 and also squeezed the ammo pouch for it in (you have to be very careful and plan ahead, otherwise it will put up a real fight). This is how it looks like:

What do you think?

Best greetings and have a nice day

Pawel

Good work on the detail of the figure, I really liked how you painted the face. I could not find anything bad about it so, good work!

If I could suggest, on the muscle of the lips, everyone's is alittle pink if not just pink, look in the mirror if you dont believe me, your guy's lips are to... flesh tone, try give them just a thiny hit of pinkish on the inner lips, itl do wonders.

other then that I like it.

Edit, on closer inspection I see you did that, but without looking at the closeup photo you would never know.  also if I may suggest, a TINY bit of black wash between the lips where they meet, would work wonders as well

NEVER use black as a wash except against very dark gray, it's way too stark. In fact, at 1/16, you should try to avoid washes altogether and work on blending (oils) or layering (acrylics) to get shadows and highlights.

You have a good base flesh color but you should try working on highlights and shadows to liven him up. He looks like a department store mannequin (The pose you were given doesn't help.) Here's one of the best faces I've ever seen. It's a new bust from Young Miniatures.

Note the various shades of skin across the face. When adding highlights and shadows, don't forget the hands. You want shadows between the fingers and these should continue up in a less stark version between the bones in the hands. There should be highlights on  the fingers with the hihest light on the knuckles. The highlights also should continue up the hand along the ridge of the bones. A good sculptor will have this in his figure's hands.

Smeagol is right about the lips, you need a slightly different color. Citadel "tanned flesh" acrylic works really well for this.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

what do you suggest then, for making that line between the lips more pronounced, it doesnt look right when its just the color

Minimally, using a wash, I'd go with burnt sienna oil, very well thinned. Using Vallejos, I'd probably mix dark fleshtone (games line) with my base color and apply a thinned line and build up as necessary to get the shadow. The only place I use a wash is for very textured surfaces like chain mail, hair or fur where it's really impractical to lay in the color.

Look at the sample above and see that there are no black shadows and everything blends together. (No, that's not mine...don't I wish! LOL)

Here's another (soon to be released) figure from the same company. A darker flesh tone to start but with more pronounced highlights and shadows. Note again, no black used in the face.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Hello smeagol, ajlafleche, thanks for comments. I did't add much red for the lips for fear of getting some kind of "lipstick" look. Didn't want any "I'm a lumberjack and I'm OK" thoughts from viewers Big Smile [:D] (that was for Monty Python fans). A little dark but not black wash for the lips is an idea I like and I'll definitely try that on the next one. As for shading,I didn't want to add more because I still have a bit of a problem to get smooth color transitions I think would be very important here.

Anybody noticed my deluxe ceramic base?

Happy modelling to all, have a nice day

Pawel
