Good start, but he really needs a lot more highlighting and shading to bring him to life.

Flare cartridges, if I'm not mistaken.

I agree with AJ, at this point, he's painted roughly to the standard of pre-painted resin figures from Hong Kong and elsewhere, now he needs to be detailed.

The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen.

That would be correct.

Those where used as insperation for the X-Wing Pilots in Star Wars.

Found this on another forum and while it is referencing a pocket I'm sure it also goes for the leg bands.

""Flare pistol is also a required piece of equipment, and it is carried in the fitted holster in 'channel trousers' together with 10 red and white flares, as well as with two smoke-cartridges, and is secured by a rope lanyard.""

Many thanks for all kind comments and suggestions. If AI built this figure alone and spent more time on it he maybe able to do better than this. But this is just one of the seven pieces he built at the same time. The other six were Trumpeter's Getchutzwagen Tiger fur 17cm Kanone, Trumpeter's B-1 "Centauro" AFV, Hobby Boss's V-150 Commando with 20mm Cannon, Tamiya's Churchill Crocodile, AFV Club's Sd.Kfz.251/21 "Drilling" and Tri Star's German Officers Field Session. He managed to finish them all in just over two weeks despite having to work as school art teacher during workdays. He had only evenings and weekends to build them all. Isn't that an unbelievable task? At that speed and quality, I have nothing to complain. ;-)

It looks very nice and "clean". I agree with the others that some shading and highlighting will take it to the next level.
