When I do eyes on figures I don't put the white in the eyes, but the only figures I have ever worked with is 1/48 figures from the kit the plane came in. A suggestion would be to do a little bit of weathering to the face and the clothes. Not too much though.

Hey FF!  Thanks for dropping by.  I think you are right about the eyes.  Well, I thought all Germans were crossed eyed!  Everytime I look at the pictures it made me wonder if the eyes may be crossed.  Painting eyes wasn't easy but Boodge toot helped.  I will try your tip to correct when I have the chance.  Have a good one!

not bad for first attempts, one thing that stands out is that they are cross eyed.  One way ive found to fix this is to do one eye upright then flip the figure upside down and do the other eye

Sorry for being a slow poke... I think it is almost completed.  I still need to tone down the gun slings and maybe make it darker brown too.  And I still need to touch up the strenes holding the figures on the base.

Hans- I painted hobnails on some figures.  Couldn't make Squardon Green stick on the soles so I gave up and painted just steel then applied MIG prod of dirt/mud so we will see little afterward.  Any tip to make it work better next time I do German figures?

Added styrene to the bases so it can hold the figures better after drilling holes into their feet and gluing real good.  Hopefully it will hold 'em good for a very long time!

Here's the gang... 1/32 figures from Airfix were not that great but it was fun practicing after twenty years!

For the chin straps and gun slings that I added to the figures, I used the foil that keeps the coffee ground fresh (another great trip from the forum) and it worked out but it really don't hold the paint if it is being worked roughly.  Just be gentle...

I'd appreciate if you have any feedback or comment... I'd love to continue and improve my skills.  THANKS and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!  Off to join the Achtraden 8X8 GB...

Actually, it's my hips, not my back... Need a double-set of joints to get outta this chair..

As for the mag-pouches being mine, I wish, lol...  I've sold off a lot of my WW2 German gear collection on Ebay to finance buying kits on Ebay, lol...

Thanks Hans!  Good to have you back.  Hope your back is treating you better.

I hope the picture of all mag pouches is your personal collection? GRIN  Freakin' COOL collection!  I am glad you shared the picture of the leather pouch mags because I decided to go for the leather but I painted it black already.  No worries!  I will highlight it with dark brown paint over the weekend.

I hope my figures will be finished over the weekend... very slow!  I have two boys and work full time.  Thanks again! Thumbs Up [tup]

Just FYI-The ones you're showing are reproductions... MP-40 mag pouches ran the gamut from Panzer Grey-Feldgrau to DAK Olive... The leather ones were usually black (actually a very dark brown), the exception being the Luftwaffe's lighter-brown leather...

Here's my latest process... most of personal gears have been painted.  Maybe it would have been easier if I paint the field gears first befored I glued them to the bodies then wash 'em.  Maybe I am wrong... will give it a shot next time I paint figures.

My favorite... the machine gunner on move!

The officer...

After seeing many pictures from the reference books, many personal gears were banged up that paints were peeled off that we could see its metal alumium or steel.  Thanks to Doog's toot i found earlier, I used little sponsage to paint the dents and it was easy and fun!

I hope to wash the uniforms over the weekend... I have to make sure the boys go out trick-n-treating so we can have some candies in the house.  Happy Halloween!

I did some research before I painted the MP40 magazines pouches for one of the figures. I learned that there were several colors but most common were dark or olive green and DAK colored pouches.  Which color would have been most common during Invasion of France?  DAK won't have happened for another year or so.

I think I didn't use the right color this time... plan to paint details and wash if I get it right.

Thanks for looking...

Hans, thanks for the tip!  Last week I bought Tamiya paints finally for the first time ever.  I repainted the uniforms... it looks alot better now.  Apparently Model Masters doesn't have one that I can just paint out of the bottle without mixing?  The only thing I am NOT CRAZY about Tamiya is the SMELL... it stinks up the whole room and my wife hates it! LOL  Maybe I should buy more Tamiya paints... Evil [}:)]

My only concern... will it be a problem if I painted the shirt using arcylic and pants using enamel if I plan to wash with lighter/darker paints using same paint perhaps enamel?

Here's the photos of faces I have painted over the weekend.  This is my first attempt painting the faces after 20+ years.  I think I am starting to fall in love with arcylic paints!  No worries... I know not all Germans are bald!  I don't have brown and light brown in arcylic so another trip to the LHS for me this week.  Which color should I paint for blondes like myself... for sure not yellow? I need to buy light gray arcylic too so I can add 5 o'clock shadows on those faces next...

I hope to wash the uniforms and work on the personal gears this week.  Feel free to let me know if there is anything I can do to improve... thanks!

Hi Hans,

I agree.  Fortunately my LHS sells Tamiya paints so I will get one you recommended next time.  They don't sell is Vallejo paints so I am not too keen about using it cause I will have to order Vallejo paints online if I need more instead doing a quick trip to the LHS minutes away. I am disappointed that MM doesn't have a good one that I can use without mixing.  Too much hassle mixing colors for figures painting.  MM Fieldgrau worked great for the trousers even tho.

Thanks... painted all faces last night and will post pictures soon.

I am afraid it is 'All Quiet on the Western Front' here.  I think I have managed to find a better paint match for the tunis.  I went to the LHS today and found nothing but came up with an idea to mix gray and green paints.  I think it worked...

Sorry about the quality of picture... used my BlackBerry this time.  If you know a better Model Master paint for the German tunis... please feel free to let me know.

Sorry... it has been a very busy summer!  Went to IPMS Convention in Ohio last week... it was BLAST! Tongue [:P]  I am almost done painting the faces.  I use either Model Master enamel and arcyl.  I used arcyl for the VERY FIRST TIME for the faces only and it came out better than I expected... I am starting to appreciate those arcyl paints!

Now I need your help... I painted the german trousers already using MM enamel German Uniform Feldgrau #2014 and it came out great! Thumbs Up [tup] Now I am struggling to find the 'right' paint to paint the tunics (tops)!!!  I want it to be more gray-greenish following the exact colors the Germans wore during the invasion of France when their uniforms were still in its best quality.

I have tried MM Field Green#1712... too green! Thumbs Down [tdn] MM Green Drab #1787.... too dark green! Thumbs Down [tdn] Last paint MM Schwarzgren #2080 came out better but still too dark. Thumbs Down [tdn]  Thinking about mixing it with something to make it lighter.  Perhaps there a better match from MM enamel paint that you recommend for me to try?  So right now I can not go any further until I find the right match.

My plan is to paint the uniforms and gears using enamel then arcyl for washing at the end.  Good or bad move?  Your suggestions would be helpful!  Thank you...

Andy

P.S.  Before you can say something about switching Vallejo paints... I plan to but not right now! Its on my Christmas list.  I have been a very good boy... Angel [angel]

You might want to consider adding the hobnails to the boots on figures that have exposed soles.. I do mine with paint...

There's a good picture of the hobnails at this site:

Hans, thanks again!  Will paint the figures as soon as they are primed.  I am afraid I won't be able to do much of painting before I leave for a week long vacation in few days.

The box says German Infantry 1939-1945 but looking at their uniforms they are wearing early uniforms because of the pleats on the shirts ...

If you're doing early war, their M35 tunic was worn, later, the M40, both had pleated pockets.  The major difference between the two was that the dark bottle-green collar was eliminated on the M40..  All German uniform issues were worn until the end of the war, although as the new uniforms came in, soldiers would exchange them and new recruits were issued them... Some veterans, however, kept their M40 uniforms, since they were of much higher quality than the late-war uniforms...

Is it safe to assume that every solider carried gas mask canisters at the early stage?

Pretty much, since the threat of chemical weapons was there..

I noticed in many photos they didn't carry those blunky canisters at the end after D-Day or so.  Was it due to shortage of resources or they finally realized there will be no chemical warfare?

Once it was apparent to the Germans that the Allies weren't going to use chemical weapons, the German soldiers pretty much left their gas masks with their rucks... American soldiers pretty much threw them away...

Hitler was no fan of chemical warfare, having been gassed himself during WW1...

Thanks Hans! Thumbs Up [tup] I had the feeling that you would be a help since you know a great deal about the German uniforms.  Last night I removed the seams and marks so it is ready to be primed.  Will use rattle can Testor gray primer tonight or tomorrow.  BUT please do not hesitate to let me know if there is anything I should change to the figures before I paint 'em.  The only thing I haven't glued on is the knive by the shovel which I will do before painting.  Is it safe to assume that every solider carried gas mask canisters at the early stage?  I noticed in many photos they didn't carry those blunky canisters at the end after D-Day or so.  Was it due to shortage of resources or they finally realized there will be no chemical warfare?

The box says German Infantry 1939-1945 but looking at their uniforms they are wearing early uniforms because of the pleats on the shirts so I will paint using two different tones of field-gray.

Again, thank you Han!

Company Grade Infantry officers (Leutnant, Oberleutnant, Hauptman in Heer units, Untersturmführer, Obersturmführer, Hauptsturmführer in the Waffen-SS carried the same gear as the rest of their men.  Field-Grade officers were less inclined to do so, unless they were going forward to the line companies..

The Y-Harness simply keeps the weight of the gear off the hips and puts it on the shoulders. It's required in order to use the rucksack, but if there's no need to carry it, the harness can be left with it.  It's a PITA to add/remove the Y-harness since you need at least a pair of pliers to open/close the clips to hook it to the K-98 ammo pouches on the belt.

Thanks ajlafeche for the image from Google.  Looks like I did OK for most of the figures.  I am positive that the officers didn't carry full gear after looking thru several books and of course the internet.  It would make sense for machine gunners not to carry full gear too due to its weight.

I will continue and look thru my referrences about officers and their personal gears.

Other than the images on the back of the box, I don't recall there being any instructions with these.

here's an image Google found:

It has been more than 20 years since I have worked on my last kit before I left for college... this kit came along with many kits I bought through eBay for a very good deal.  And I thought I'd practice my skills on this old 1/32 kit Airfix German Infantry 1939-1945 before I can work on my good kits.

 Airfix 1/32 German Infantry

I discovered that there is no instructions for this kit.  I have contacted Airfix and Hornby customer service for assistance but no luck they have not replied my emails.  So I did my best to put the figures together without instructions after 20+ years of no modeling. Confused [%-)] But it was fun anyway!

Here's what I need to hear from you guys... did I put the personal gear together correctly?  According to my referrences it shows like this:

I am not sure if I have dressed the officer and machine gunner properly since they were not wearing the '"y" straps harness... just regular belts so I put less gears on those two figures.  I assume everybody has to carry the water bottles, mess tins and gas mask canisters at early stages of war.  The officer is carrying a map case as usual.

The second figure from the left is the machine gunner... without the shoulder harness.

I'd appreciate to hear your constructive feedback before I sand them real good to remove remaining seams and paint 'em up using some kind of primer paint.
