Painting How-to vids/dvd`s
Posted by Chainmail on Friday, July 31, 2009 6:22 AM

I am new to the modelling scene and would like a go a figures.I have read several books and mag articals BUT you not not beat actually seeing it real time. Are there any vids to be watch online at all OR a recommended dvd/dvd`s to but.

I made the mistake of buying a dvd on tank modelling with out finding out about it.It was really bad!! I want to avoid that this time.

I found many vids on youtube on tank/vehicals modelling (Japanesse and very good models) BUT none on figure painting.

and here i was going to recommend utube. unfortunately i dont know of any dvd's (doesnt mean they dont exist), but the only real way your going to learn anything is to sit down and try it yourself. to me a dvd, video is only going to waste your money! because watching it wont make you a great figure painter nor are they going to show you some kind of "magical" trick to doing it. trust me, i thought along the lines as you do and always thought wouldnt that be great if i could do what they do. my lhs would "give classes" on figure painting and i went twice just to "see it". did absolutely nothing for me except show me how "other" people paint figures. my best results came from trying it over and over again until i developed a way that worked for me and that other people "liked" my results. that's the only "trick" to painting figures...practice!!! Wink [;)] just my My 2 cents [2c]

Andrea has a decent beginner video that covers the very basics and a free download here with much of the same info.

Vallejo Acrylics has anopther tutorial under "model Color."

The best way to improve your figure painting is to find a mentor. You don't say where you are, so it's hard to help there. Clubs are gerat for finding mentors. Are there any figure shows near you? There are several big ones acrss he US and several more in Europe. Networking at these events an help. PM me with your location and I may be able to make some suggestions for events and clubs.

The next best thing is to frequent some of the more figure oriented sites:

Historicus Forma, part of Armorame.

Time Lines

Planet Figure

And Alan and Marion Ball's website. He sculpts for himself ands numerous figure companies and she paints. They are a couple really nice people, too.

Remember, if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.
