First Panzer Crewman
Posted by Schnobs on Sunday, August 16, 2009 3:17 AM

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to practice painting the Black Panzer Crewman uniform without practicing on a real expensive resin figure so I took a Tamiya fig that came with my Tamiya Tiger1 and put an Ultra Cast resin head on him.

My Air Brush is out to the shop for repairs so I Primed him with a rattle Can of Tamiya German Grey and then hollowed out the neck for a realistic set.

I used Vallejo Colors only after that with a couple of Black and Burnt Umber oil washes to tie everything in.

I know I have a lot to learn and the one the thing I learned tonight is not to drink multiple cups of coffee late at night when you are trying to paint intricate details!  Confused [%-)]

Very good work as usual Schnobs, I really like it. Although I must say, ( you might have already fixed it, I don't know ), but there is a small seam line in picture two, on the figure's right hand. But like I said, you might have already made it all better!

BTW, very nice work on the ultra cast head, I am in awe of some of you skills.

      Thanks, Jim

Hey, Edmund, looking mighty fine, I am surprised at the detail on this Tamiya guy, more than on the DML pre gen 2 guys, that's for sure.

I like the look, where's he going to end up?

Me too actually!  He belongs in My Tamiya Tiger I kit so that's where he will go

Thanks Buddy!

Yes he is wearing gloves and I wasn't sure if that was part of the glove seam or mold seam.

I am probally going to paint up another one just to try different colors tones in the black.

Thanks man!  He is actually my 8th figure but my first Black uniform.  I find painting black challenging and I am not sure what colors I should use for shadows and highlights.  What I have read varies from using blue for shadows and violets for highlights.  Also one method is mixing flesh to the black for basecoat and more flesh to highlight and pure black for shadows.

Well, we know you paint EXCELLENT figs, DAKobra Commander, the gunner on the Hotchkiss, etc and etc.  I think he looks great, but I know you, if you are not happy, change it up.  I think the flesh highlights is more of a wear marking than a true highlight, you know, like around seams, not actual highlight.

Let's change it up a bit if you aren't happy.  I did my monkey with instructions imitation right after we talked.

I went black+german dark grey, about 50-50, one drop of each, then 2 brushfuls of prussian blue, that was my base color, 2 coats.

I took some off white and put a drop into what was left of the prussian blue, that made a nice robin egg blue, and added brushfuls, one at a time, for the successive highlights, at least 3x.

Then I took straight black/german dark grey, without the blue, and used that for the first shadow, then straight black and a 0000000 brush for the darkest and the outlining, and the belt, which looks VERY dark against the base coat.

Try what you told me to do!Big Smile [:D]  You'll like it.

EDIT TO ADD_Edmund, that dude is devoid of uniform wrinkles, the molding is very unnatural, I only noticed it when I went looking at the flesh highlights.  You need to kick him to the curb and get a resin, or at least somebody with wrinkles in the uniform.  THat guy is never going to look right.

One more guy before I hit the T-34 with vengence!
