Used Book Sale Score!!
Posted by SkullGundam on Sunday, October 25, 2009 4:27 PM

So I was at a used book sale in Arlington Heights yeasterday.  If you've never been to one, libraries take in donated books and get rid of their old ones at these sales.  Most of them charge about 50 cents for paperbacks and 1 or 1.50 for harcovers.  Sometimes you can find games and stuff too.  Well, my girlfriend found this for me.

I know some of them are missing, but they only charged me .50 cents!  I did a little looking and Grenedier supposedly only made these things from 80 to 83, so that makes them older than me.  They are pretty good for their age.  They come with this painting guide that gives tips and a color guide for each character.  I think Meghan (my gf) made a pretty good find.  Anyone know anything else about these?

 Haha!!  I plan on it.

Nice job on the Paine book.  I look, but there are never any modeling books at the sales.  I settle for books with pictures of planes for reference.

GAAAAH!! I am so jealous! That is an awesome find! Seriously, I spend time once a week online trying to run down those old Grenadier sets.

The Grenadier company used to make a whole bunch of those sets. Quality varied - the later ones were better than the earliest. The figures are made of lead, so they are softer than modern figures, and therefore easier to clean up and modify. Lead also holds detail better than the pewter they use today.

Back in the 80's, everybody was into these, even guys who didn't play RPG's collected them. Lead was cheap, so you could buy a mini for 60 cents almost anywhere. Even Toys R Us carried them for awhile.

In the early 1990's, Congress outlawed the use of lead for things like this, and so the prices of these minis tripled while the quality dropped. After that, the demand for them fell and the only people collecting them were hardcore miniature wargamers and diehards like myself.

Excellent find. I hope they bring you as much enjoyment as they did me back in the day. Cool [8D]
