Hey Buddy~ I like this figure , those British Paratroopers have always been heros of mine. Quite a brave, rugged bunch, and not often enough modeled.  What you've got here is a really strong start, but I don't think you're done. Mostly the entire thing lacks lights. Just doesn't look right.

That is, not only highlights, on the top-most areas of each color, but also the mid-light between the light color and what you have here(I would call a good base or mid or mid-dark) These Dennison smocks are just MUCH more faded out. Your colors are darkly blocked in---on the webbing gear too(yours looks a bit like well-tanned leather) this color is a difficult one to nail down,, but really a lightened khaki is close enough(although troops would sometimes field-dye all the gear a O.D.  to take the brightness off it, so green webbing is also seen.)Your trouser color (and helmet) are  the closest to correct.  Besides The color issues, the sheen is killing the effect, when your all finished a spray of Dull-coat is a MUST.--Also avoid flash photos(is that what this is?)

 Print photo at home

I'll give you a great reference for what these uniforms looked like in action. these are some British re-enactors that really go to pains to get things right. Study the look of thier gear, you'll see what I mean, and what to do.   http://www.1stairborne.com/   Painting camo patterns in larger scale take some serious work to make convincing, you may want to search for some article on that. Good Luck

@Indy:Thanks for the critique and the reference! I believe you're right. This is my first large-scale figure and the habits I've developed painting 1/72 shows, especially in the exaggerated delineation between colors. The sheen was caused by the light position. My light tent setup is geared for small wargaming minis and the figure's head was very near the light. I've since corrected that with a bigger soft box and hope to take better pictures with a repainted version. Thanks for the reference. The link you provided is chockful of pix! I have the 1/35 version of these guys from Dragon and will work on them soon with your tips in mind. Thanks!

I see what you mean. Been going over the link you sent, awesome reading!I'm currently going over pictures of the smock and trying to work out how to add the shading you mentioned. I'm planning to try it out on the same figure since the 1/35 version still has to be built.

~Cool man ~ It's nice to be able to help. Yeah that 1st Airborne site helpped me out when I needed reference for these uniforms. Terrific guys( FUNNY too, when you read through the captions, huh?!_)

Might have been a good idea to step up to the 1/35 figures  on your way to the 1/16, but I don't know, I've never gone large scale yet. Eveything I'm into so far is 1/35 - 1/32 .... I will tell you this :  take your time. Don't expect to get it done fast, especially before you form good work habits.                   And everyoes best advice.... is practice...alot.

Just a quick update: aside from reworking the fig above a bit, I got myself a box of the 1/35 Red Devils from Dragon. They'll be seen here soon. Hoorah!

Hoorah for sure!! I have a soft spot for the Red Devils too ever since i read ' A Bridge Too Far ' when i was a kid. I remember it was the thickest book i had ever read at that stage. I was quite proud of myself!

A good first effort on your Red Devil mate. I have this in my figure stash and one day want to combine it with the old Verliden ' A Bridge Too Far ' kit, the one with the Red Devil carrying his wounded mate.

STIKPUSHER....  that's a great link. I will benefit from that too when i get around to my Red Devils...Confused
