Gillie suits??
Posted by model maniac 96 on Sunday, November 29, 2009 11:57 PM
Hi there everybody!

I was wondering, do any of you know how I could scratch build a gillie suit? I was thinking of the type used by the Japanese in WW2, if any of you could help me that would be great!

Thank, Jim

The Ghillie suit is basically just a net with fabric strips and local foliage added in...  Off the top of my head, I think you could try using some white glue-coated gauze and adding some model RR foliage...

Thank, Jim

I thought the Japanese used natural vegation rather than a gillie suit.  From the WW 2 pictrues I have seen (and not many at that) even the gillies' gillie suits were not like we see them today.  I don't claim to be an expert (I did make a gillie suit for hunting from a kit).  I remeber in Wind Talkers it looked as if they (the Japanese) used long grass tuck into belts Etc.  I wonder if you could use the long grass for RR modeling (brain not working to good now can't remember the name of the stuff I have).

Denial, it's not just a coping mechanism, it's a way of life.

Hey Jim, check out this link, http://lonesentry.com/articles/ttt08/japanese-camouflage-garment.html it may be helpful. The site lonesentry.com has a lot of interesting written reference material taken from World War II period sources.

regards,

Jon

Reading the link and looking at the drawing, a bird's wing/tail feather popped into my head.  Not sure how well it would glue on and hold paint, but it looks like it could be worth a consideration...
