New Years Quick Build: DML French Foreign Legion - Cote d'Ivoire
Posted by psstoff995 on Friday, January 1, 2010 9:44 PM

Well it's been a while since I've done a real WIP and as all my builds are usually epic year long struggles I've decided to try my hand at one of these quick builds! I've done about 11 hours of work so far. The flesh is done, waiting on the oils to dry and figured I could take a break. I'm going out of town until Thursday so this "quick" build might be a week or a week and a half long. But I really want to get it done before my Bday on the 15th.

Here's some background images and videos, I'm trying to get the feel of confidant special forces soldiers up against some local militia with shoot and scoot gorilla tactics. Random small arms fire and skirmishes but nothing serious enough for everyone to feel the need to wear a helmet- all my figures will have one- but I have one guy shooting from the hip in the middle of the road and the commander sticking his neck way out into the street where the bullets are flying.

Here's the box art.

And 2 hours worth of work:

After 6 or so hours:

After 11 hours:

The flesh tone work is Tom (camo junkie)'s modern figure oil paint tut here in the fig forum.

At 13 hours:

And now finished- 20 hour build:

It's a small base, the overall footprint is about 4x4", the "model area" is smaller than that, probably about 3.5x3.5"

Thanks a lot Tom, these guys are going to be in Woodland, your photos are going to be helpful for the camo pattern/equipment just didn't want to post them up here as I wasn't sure if any of them were sensitive etc.

This dio's in Africa (Cote d'Ivoire/Ivory Coast) but let me answer Will and you at the same time-

The 4th figure from the set- I'm going to convert the left arm into a "Stop" gesture and I'm going to put him alongside a few local militia types getting ready to search a suspected insurgent.

This base isn't really big enough to comfortably fit all four which is no big deal for me as I was only going to have the sniper and the hip shooter originally.

What happened was Dragon mislabeled the instructions and switched the part number reference with the sniper and the commander on the radio. So when I was trying to fit all the arms on there and the rifle wouldn't fit in I finally figured it out. As I had almost finished him anyway, I did a little test fit and figured he looked pretty good on the base.

Not to mention one really shouldn't have an even number of figs on a base... not that I usually follow that doctrine- but that's my story hahaha

So Tom- the fourth figure (who looks odd in a combat setting just chilling there... no attempt at taking cover, no bladed stance, lowered weapon... looks like a deer in the headlights) will be in the Middle East alongside friendly forces (maybe some US SF guys?) like the ref. you sent. (Thanks again btw)

I'm having more trouble with the camo on these guys than I planned, looking at a second coat, update pics tomorrow when they're decent.

Time spent so far has gone from 13 to about 16... maybe 17 hours. Added some minor street scruff vegetation to the base, just got to finish up the Legionnaires and dull coat them- that's all.
