Modern Canadian Infantry
Posted by DerekB/85 on Saturday, February 20, 2010 5:14 PM

Does anybody know of any kits which feature Modern day Canadian infantry. To make my dioramas, I modify modern day American soldiers by shaving down their helmets slightly, which I do not mind one bit, but it is the weapons that get me. For those of you who do not know, Canadian Forces infantry are equipped with the C7 rifle, which is almost identical to the M16. The biggest visual difference is the sighting. The CF uses a C79 Elcan optic. I have been chopping off the carrying handle to the M16s on the figures and scratchbuilding the Canadian optics, but, I was wondering if there were any kits out there that came with Canadian weaponry. Given that we have 3,000 troops in Afghanistan and are one of the few nations that have been doing any fighting (and lots of it), one would think that some kits of CF personnel (or equipment, for that matter) would be easier to find.

Thanks.

Accurate Armour has an SAS Land Rover crew (FS 11) that has what you are looking for; the side arms provided are listed as " Dimarco Colt Commanders with/without UGL and ACOG sights".   I know that at least two of the three weapons have an optical sight in place of the handles, one of those having a UGL attached.  If you look closely at the pictures of the crew, you can glimpse the weapons to see if that is what you need.  I know this may be a pretty expensive alternative, but you can consider casting some for yourself once you get them.  If you do not need that many, I could send a spare set to you (I have two sets of the crew figures and can get by with one set of weapons); no charge, of course.  If interested, let me know.  I also think Trumpeter is coming up with a weapons pack of M-16 type weapons, but do not know much more than that.

Trumpeter has several new M-16 family sets with various optics. Check out those to see if they have something that looks right. The C7 Rifle sounds like an M-16A4, which has a removable carrying handle and rail system on the upper receiver for mounting any optics.

I could swear there are some new release Canadian resin fugures out there.

Stik is right, Trumpeter is making some nice looking AR15/M16A1/M4 sets.  I was actually browsing our local hobby shops stock of them yesterday.  The M4 version has a number of add on sights (like the ACOG for the Marines and Army as well as the Aimpoint for which the Army uses as well.)  I can't recall if the package included the ELCAN, at the 1/35 scale might be a passable imitation.

Check out Trumpeter's website; kits 508,509, 510 look like they may have what you need.  There are some detail photos of the kits' contents and instructions that might help you narrow down which may be the most appropriate--still may have to do some mixing and matching of sets, but should make your conversions easier that what your currently doing.  Also, there are some modern Canadian tank troops available, but are upper torsos for armour; cannot remember who manufactures, but believe they may be Czech.  Will try to find them again and get back--unless someone has better memory than mine!

Try Ultracast or other Canadian After Market companies for the M-16 / AR -15 variant you seek. Better yet use clear sprue to scratch build the optics, dip in Future and paint the outer casing. Presto! Take it further by sanding the ends convex to simulate the light focusing to the center like the real deal! Sun shades can be made out of rolling papers (your from Vansterdam right?) I prefer Zig Zag blue for model building fine tubes ect. Roll around a drill bit and seal with CA glue, cut on bit when dry then remove. YesCool

Real Model (www.realmodel.cz) has a set of Modern Canadian Crew figures (set no. RMF 35005) --2 are 3/4 length, 1 is full sized and can probably be made into a infantry man.  It does not look like there are any accessories included.  They are wearing current(?) body armour and tanker helmets.  The price given is 20 euros, and 3 sets were listed as currently being in stock--though you can certainly check with your favourite dealer as well.  Hope this may help.
