New Airfix 1/32 figures-BAD-BAD!
Posted by arthouros on Thursday, May 13, 2010 4:50 AM

Just to inform people about the new really bad 1/32 airfix figures.

Just got them and i was truly disappointed!

There is a lot of flash to the edges but the greatest problem is not that, it is the very bad plastic... it is very hard, it brakes even within the box (some of the gun edges may be already broken inside the box). I guess this plastic is cheaper but what was one of the greatest things about these plastic figures? The soft nice plastic. You could even unpaint them with aceton if you wanted and repaint them, they were never braking and kids could play better.

I am so disappointed that i will not be buying any more new stuff from airfix

Sad... i have loved them since i was a kid, very sad...

The 'soft' plastic figures are intended for kids to play with. Everyone remembers the 'green army men' as kids. The harder plastic is intended for static displays. For us who are serious about our scale miniatures the main concerns are the face sculpt, accuracy and detail. The broken parts can be addressed by Airfix in the future packaging.

A few questions:

Are the figures one piece, as in do they require assembly?

Can you post a picture of the figures? A description is usually not enough to get the point across.

I  bought the American Infantry for an ETO diorama with the Italeri Sherman.  Yeah, they're not Dragon- but they're less than 10 bucks for 5 figures too.  I wouldnt discount them completely

These figures are supposed to be a rerelease of the old 1/32 figures. They have the same molding, poses and they are single pieces. They are not the multipose figures. I bought them because i thought they would be like the old ones. If you know of which figures i am talking about you will understand why it is so bad to be made with a bad hard plastic. They are NOT high class modelers figures. They are for playing mostly, simply they had a very good detail for that and this was the reason they became so popular and famous.

Even painting them (the new ones) with enamels creates some weird surface effects (some times something like wrinkles. it seems like the plastic melts by the color?)

In other words the "soul" of these kind of figures was the soft nice plastic!

Now this will go down...

It makes me sad because i have loved these kind of figures for many reasons. One of them was the fact that you could remove the paint by dropping them inside a jar filled with aceton, paint them again and again. With this you could even use them for experimenting with colors.

Anyway... it was a bad choice for airfix to use this kind of plastic
