As far as practicing goes, something I do is buy Warriors resin figures from Squadron when they go on sale for around $3.99.  They may not be a subject or pose that I want, but they are good to practice on.  Painting better quality resin figures is usually easier than painting low quality plastic ones. That's another reason to pick up figs on sale.

Thanks guys!!

Maybe I shouldn't have said "new" and changed. I never was that good to start with when it came to painting figures so all of this stuff is a big help. I really want to be able to put out some good figures if I can. I plan to spend the time and pratice on them.

Kentucky Colonel

Does anybody know any good books on 1/35 figure painting? It's been years since I've painted figures and it seems things have changed somewhat with new and different ideas.

To your question, I'll second the suggestions made, but I'll emphasize, look for and buy any of Shep Paine's books, or even go to his website and download one of the old Monogram "Tips on Building Dioramas" brochures that he wrote and which were packaged in some of their armor and aircraft kits.  Shep's books are available through Amazon.com, if I'm not mistaken, and maybe through the large chain stores like Borders.  His website is www.sheperdpaine.com.

To your observation about things changing, I'll say, not necessarily, at least, not as far as ideas go.  That is to say, you can find tutorials from this painter or that, but I will bet that the basic principles, such as the ones Shep uses and describes, and as are described in some of the books Krow113 showed-I have some of those same, older books: Model Soldiers in Color, How to Make Model Soldiers, Model Soldiers, Scale Model Soldiers, and Shep's How to Make Dioramas-the principles that you learned back in the day are probably still valid.  Sure, there may be improved products, as far as paints and supplies go, for example, and certainly better figure kits, but I think you'll find what's old is new.

I'm not discouraging you from looking around or looking for every source, article, book, SBS or video that you can find.  We all look to hone our technique.  But you may be in better shape than you might think.

Hope that helps!

Best regards,

Brad

Do a book search in models&kits on ebay ,I got a lot of these in groups of books for cheap. Of all these a few must haves woud be Shep Paines book , Doug Lees book , Andreas series , and the bible -Modelmakers Handbook. I even found a few more after pixing these. Osprey does have a lot of specific books ie: USAF ,RAF ,German aircrew uniform books. After soaking up the knowledge in these ,and others I was able to produce this:
