German Uni colors..
Posted by rudedog on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 7:51 PM

.. I've been away & during my time off I bought & learned a bit  from ' Deutsche Soldaten". When I started back into this great history hobby a decade ago,I followed what I saw from many great modellers. That all WW-2 German Uni's were Grey. After reading the afore-mentioned book,& watching some color films from the era,I think I have been following "Hogan's heroes" to a wrong tack. From what I've read, after 1940,the common German Uni. color was more of a Olive-green color,as opposed to what I always thought was Grey. While I do realize the German's had quite a flair for individuality between branches & even units,If there was commanality during the latter half of the war [ not factoring in Camo-schemes ],would it be safe to say most ground units would be wearing something greener, rather than Grey ?  Idon't mean to start a controversial thread, just trying to be generally accurate in my work.  thanks, rudedog

It's called Field Grey  It was the standard uni color for ground units.  There are several paints that reproduce it.  Panzer crews wore black.

Field Grau - keep in mind there are several different shades of this, not all were the same.

Thanks ,Bob,that's where I need a hand.Due to my LHS's selection of only 3 paint lines for Mil. colors [ Tamiya, Modelmaster enamel & Modelmaster acryl. ] I was thinking of MM enamel. What's your thought on that. It'll be brushed, not sprayed.  rudedog

I would use Vallejo Field Gray or the Andrea Field Gray. Both are excellent choices and are different tones. Remember to add a drop flesh to create your highlight colors.

Hogan's Heroes depicted a Luftwaffe POW camp. The Luftwaffe troops wore a different shade, a blue grey. Field gray was more greenish and Testor's has the uniform field grey in their paint line.

Michtoy & Telsono,Thanks for the insight.I Know I can get Valejo & Andrea on-line. But I'mtrying to do these three builds on a shoestring budget, with the holidays approaching & a very reasonable L.H.S. { as I said, with limited choices. I did appreciate the confirmation [ that I thought was my imagination ] That Luftwaffe Uni's were greyer. Thanks , guys.  rudedog.  P.S. , what does the drop of "flesh" do to the Field grey ?

Klik, there are so several camo patterns worn by the Germans during the war.  Which one were you seeking for?  Most popular camo would be like this... smock widely used.   In that case I would use khaki or so as base paint then dark green and military brown.

For more references on German uniforms, I like those websites... thanks Han and others!

Telsono,I had forgot to also thank you & pose yet a narrower question. While learning more from everyone here,I meant to also ask about luftwaffe ground forces.Eighty-eight &,20Mm,& 251-17 or 251 Drilling crews,& other luftwaffe infantry, were they outfitted with the same Feldbluse & Feldhose as Wehrmact infantry [ in so far as coloration ] ? I do know Luftwaffe aircraft support personel & pilots had  very "blue" Uni's. My copy of " Deutsche Soldaten " really only covers the uniforms & equipment of the average infantry soldier.  thanks, rudedog

Here's a site with good color reproduction uniforms.  Among the best, IMHO as a WW2 re-enactor..

Glad to help.. Just a tip, I've that found Tamiya's Feldgrau (XF-65 Field Grey) to be the best match, color-wise, to the actual Heer uniforms I own.. I use it as a base-color for all Heer uniforms, and then make various shades.

I have to agree with Hans... he told me to try Tamiya Feldgrau long time ago and it was the best match.  But you have to be very careful if you plan to handbrush. It comes off easily if it is still wet.  I find it works best if you airbrush the base coat twice before you apply the shades.

Priming it will allow you to brush-paint with Tamiya paints MUCH easier... Over bare plastic, each brush-stroke just pulls off the preceeding one...

I use "Tru-Color" grey primer from Wal Mart for just about everything needing primed... About a buck-nineteen a can...  However, for figures I also keep a can of Krylon grey primer handy too, since it's got a better "tooth" for grabbing the paint off the brush and holding it... It's a darker shade than the Wally-World primer...
