My Very First Figure
Posted by cquirk on Sunday, October 31, 2010 8:37 AM

Hello,

This is my very first attempt at building and painting a figure.  The kit is  Verlinden and is the 200mm WWII German Machine Gunner.  I used plain old off the shelf paint (Model Masters, PollyS Acrylics).

So, how did I do.  Please provide feedback on any tips or suggestions you may have as I plan to build more of these dudes.

Thanks, Chris

My suggestion would be not to use a black wash on the head/face next time... on flesh, it looks to dark, and makes the wrinkles in the skin seem to deep--think Zombie-fied.

Other than that, an excellent figure-you even got the detail in the guy's mouth! Just look at them pearly whites!

I see your point.  However there was  no wash used.  The whole model was painted black and then dry brushed.  I remember when I used to get done shooting M-60s at the range that I had black powder residue all over my face and hands.  That's the effect I was going for.  For future models what would be a better color for the base coat prior to working the flesh tones?

I like to base coat with Red Oxide automotive primer on figures. Its a dark red color that will not be too noticeable if it shows through or blends in thinned enamel paint. Also its good for resin primer coat applications. Clean resin thoroughly first and allow the primer to cure a few days before adding base coats of color.

Its a good job on your first figure! I really like the camouflage pattern on the jacket.
