Deyun Hobbies 150mm US Special Forces - Afghanistan ... Update 13DEC
Posted by modelchasm on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 1:41 PM

Started building up this one a bit back, but really just starting to really get time to work on it. The kit is from Deyun Hobbies, 150mm US Special Forces figure. I'm going to be building and painting this one up to be a figure out of current-day operations in Afghanistan wearing the new multicam uniform. It'll be a difficult pattern, but with a little patience I think that it will come out fine.

Here's the kit all laid out. As far as the kit goes ... Deyun's kits are a little pricey. The fit isn't the greatest and some of the sculpting is a little "chunky". Some details are also a little off, but none of these things are un-fixable. With a little TLC and some scratching, this should turn out to be a decent figure.

Some shots of the figure mocked up ...

More to follow ...

HAHAHA!!!! ... Does it now!?! .... HAHAHA!!!! Thanks for checking in Tom ...

As you tell from the first picture, the ACH helmet got some special treatment from my dremel. I just didn't like the look of the goggles and the helmet looked a little too bunky. It was shaved and sanded down considerably to look more like an ACH without a cover.

I then started in on the M4 rifle. The original barrel was a little long for my taste and it was bent. So instead of heating and bending it back to shape I cut it and made it a "shorty" barrel. A small wire piece was inserted into the barrel to give it some strength. The flash supressor was drilled out and the ACOG sight was replaced with a scratch-built EOTECH holographic sight. The trigger well was also drilled out, the stock cut and shortened some, and a small piece of wire was added ot make a front sight post.

After playing around with the weapon, I broke out the Millliput and got to work on the figure scratching such things as a pistol belt and detailing the drop leg holster and a drop pouch. These things really helped tie in the torso and the leg pieces. I also used Milliput to fill some seams at the shoulders after correcting the fit and angle of the M4, detail the ACH helmet, and add in some shoulder straps for an assault pack to come later.

The assault pack that I decided to add is a spare and comes from the McFarlane Military Figure line of vinyl figures. The scale is technically a little different, but it really fits. I made a "shorty" radio antenna from brass rod and added a radio cable by making a wire coil and then slipping it into a length of heat-shrink and then lighty heating it up to make the radio cable. Here's a couple of overall shots before the primer was laid down....

The only other thing that I've got so far to post is the completion of the face. The shots are a little close up so the detailing looks a little rough, but I'm pleased with it. I might blend in the scruff a little more, but I don't want to over power/ darken the face too much.

Please let me know if you guys have any comments so far ...  I can't get better without them. Thanks for checking things out....

Working on completing the M4 tonight, so more to follow.....

Thanks for the commnts guys. Got a little more work done, but it's slow. Here's a short update...

Painting on the figure has stalled out a bit ... I'm trying to learn/ teach myself how to paint the multicam paint job. It's going a little slow .... I think I'm going to have to cut/ make some masks to do it correctly. But I know if I take the time it'll come out spec-tac-oooo-lar. The hardest part that I'm trying to learn how to do is part of the background colors. If you look really closely at the picture you notice that some of the colors have a very soft fade to them while just a little further down it turns into a very hard line. Anyway ... it's an interesting scheme to learn ....

After looking at things and studying the mulitcam pattern I ended up going back and resprayed the whole figure the same shade of tan as the vest. Then I shot random lines of brown. These two colors will ast as the base colors for the multicam.

I also reshot the helmet with olive drab since I thought it came out a little too light before. After the OD dried I shot tan over a mesh screen for the snake skin effect.

Started drawing out my own masks as I prepared to shoot the base green color .... Then I started applying the masks ..... This little bit took me about 15m to do. ..... this is going to be "fun".

That's pretty much it for now. I'm hoping to have a little more time coming up to keep working, but right now it's going to be slow...

Thanks for checking things out and as always ... any and all C&C is welcome.

I really like that snake skin effect on the helmet. Really brings up the level of detail.

Hope your multicam comes out looking good.

GRIMMY!!!!! Good to "see" you brother .... Modeling is going a little slow these days, but we're good. I'm hoping to get back to painting this next week, but right now I'm having to shuffle around my work area so I'm kind-of stopped at the moment.

Thanks everybody for all the comments. Hopefully, I'll have something more for you in a day or two in the form of the first layer of green ....

Thanks for checking things out guys! Stay tuned for more!!!...
