Ants?
Posted by mitsdude on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 11:41 AM

I'm looking for scale models of ants.

I'm thinking 3-6 inches.

The 3D models made of wood will not work.

I've seen the bags of insects with ants in them but those are to small.

I know someone makes styrene models because I've seen them. I just dont remember who made them.

Aurora made an ant, back in the day.  It was about 4 to 6 inches long, when assembled, if I remember correctly.  I'll have to look it up in Graham when I get home.

I'm not sure if it was ever brought again by any of Aurora's successors:

-Monogram, who bought most of the Aurora catalog, when Aurora went out of business (some of those kits are still in production today, in Revell-Monogram's catalog

-Polar Lights or Moebius, who re-issued some of the old Aurora models, eg, the movie monsters, as well as adding new subjects in similar style.

I just ran a quick search on eBay for "aurora model kits":

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=aurora+model+kit&_sacat=See-All-Categories

I went a couple of pages in, but didn't see the kit I'm thinking of, but it could be several pages in.

If I find more info in Graham's book, I'll post it back here.

Best regards,

Brad

Heller made several kits of insects.  They were about 6" long.  They made an ant (Formica Rufa) in that series.  Last release was about 8 years ago.

Just as a reference, there's a build-up photo of said Heller kit on p. 37 of the current (January 2012) FSM.

That's probably the Heller kit I'm thinking of, then, though, I wasn't thinking of the giant insect dios that Aurora did, but rather, the line of realistic animal models that they did.
