Some questions...
Posted by KindKiwi436 on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 3:23 PM

Alright, im just working on my first diorama, and I have a pretty good idea for a scene. I own a bunch of figures, but they aren't the right poses. Does anyone here actually convert figures and re-pose them by mixing parts and using heat? Is it a good idea for a beginner to try?

Also, for my base, is it recommended that I use Celluclay, or can I use that Woodland Scenics papier mache strips? What do you guys recommend?

Also, I bought some Tamiya figures, a tank and some russians, as well as some Zvezda figures. They're both 1/35, but it seems that the Zvezda figures are much smaller than the Tamiya ones. Are there any companies that are a comparable size ot Tamiya?

Finally, for trying out poses, should I just use putty of some sort?

Thanks a lot, it would really help.

i cut the limbs at places that move (i.e. knees, elbows) and reposition them as needed, filling in the gaps and sanding as needed.

i'm working on my first diorama s well and i cant really help you there, but i used drywall plaster for my ground work. worked ok, but took about a week for half an inch of it to dry.

For Tamiya figure size, its not just tamiya and zvezda that have stuff that seems a little wrong in size...when comparing my academy tank crew with my tamiya tank crew, the academy crew seemed about 7 feet tall.

Thanks! i was thinking of using drywall plaster as well. Did it look decently good, and was it easy to sculpt and move?

Tamiya figures may seem small but they actually scale out to 35th better than most figures which tend to drift to 32nd scale or larger...

As far as base medium there is no silver bullet...I use celluclay a lot but it is far from a perfect medium...it tends to curl and lift easily and has a lot of shrinkage...plaster and other fillers are less prone to shrinkage but tend to weigh more when dry...

Best advice is try a lot of different materials and techniques and you'll figure out what YOU like best...there is no substitute for experimentation, trial and error and practice...

Just do it and post pics...
